Wiggins, Toombs come up short
at Georgia Senior Championship

at the Georgia State Golf
Association Georgia Senior
Championship at Doublegate
Country Club in Albany.
Eddie Wiggins of Warner
Robins, despite being within
striking range following the
first and second day of com
petition shot a 79 on the
final day - four shots worst
than the day before - for a
final of 228.
The difference meant
Sappington won the event
and Wiggins was relegated
to 31st in a tie with eight
Westfield competes at Stratford,
FPD cross-country invitationals

Westfield’s cross-coun
try team opened the 2005
season Aug. 27 with a run
at the Georgia Children’s
Home in First Presbyterian
Day’s Second Annual
Invitational.
Between the varsity and
junior varsity boys and girls,
there were 529 runners and
25 teams competing.
Westfield’s boys varsity
team finished 17th at the
meet and with 401 points
while the varsity girls were
14th with 309.
Varsity runners ran 3.1-
mile course while JV run
ners ran 1.5. All completed
the course, said head coach
Wendy Bryan.

Northside got a single run
in the second but Erie plated
a pair in the bottom of the
fifth as the Lady Eagles fell
behind for the first time that
late in the game in the tour
nament.
But Northside bounced
back as Wallace drove home
the tying run with a triple
and came home with the
winning marker on a single
by Levy. Northside got three
runs on three hits and no
errors. Erie got two runs on
two hits and one error.

It was Sappington’s third
consecutive championship.
He edged out the only other
three-time champion, Bill
Ploeger of Columbus, by a
stroke.
Ploeger, who won the event
in 1995, 1997 and 1999, had
an opportunity to send it
into a playoff, but his 13-foot
birdie putt on 18 slid just an
inch right of the hole, giving
Sappington the victory.

The boys team finished
with an 11th overall place
ment (269), while the girls
team finished 13th (314).
“We defeated all teams
in our region and look
forward to bringing home
the region championship
at the end of the season,”
said Bryan. “Stratford is

Wallace took the win in
all five tournament games
as she allowed a total of
six runs on 15 hits over the
course of the tournament.
Northside now has a
record of 12-2 with Wallace
taking the mound win in all
12 victories.

Central at the Eagleplex on
