Local volleyball squads take to the court

“All aboard.”
If volleyball were a train,
that would have been the
words echoed throughout
Houston County this past
Thursday.
Northside would have
been the conductor.
When it hosted Perry for
a twin-bill - it was supposed
to be a one-and-one but
Americus-Sumter pulled out
citing the cost of fuel - it
marked the first time all of
the county’s schools were in
action all at one time.
While the Lady Eagles and
Lady Panthers were going
head-to-head, Warner Robins
and Houston County were
doing likewise at Rumble
gym.
As far as Northside, the
Lady Eagles beat Perry two
matches to none. The host
won the first game in the
first match 26-24. Perry won
the second game 25-14 and
Northside cruised in the
decider 25-15.
In the second match, Perry
won the first game 25-10 but
the home team rallied to win
the second 25-18 and the
final one 25-15.
“The girls are improving
as we are still working on
all aspects of the game,”
said Northside head coach
Dennis Hakes. “The girls
did a better job of serving on
Thursday than they did on
Tuesday.
“My power players need
a little work once they get
a nice set and my back row
must do a better job of pass
ing.
“Perry looked good for
a first-year program,” he
added. “They have a few
players that can play above
the net. They like us need
work on passing to the set
ter.”
Leading scorers for the
Lady Eagles were Noele
Nichols, Britteny Barnes
and Caryn Perry. The Lady
Eagles and Lady Panthers
were to play again today at
vM/KKk.

Warner Robins beginning at
4:30 p.m.
As far as the Demonettes
and Lady Bears they had to
first deal with a late official
and then No. 9 ranked Mary
Persons.
Houston County was ham
pered by the long delay of
waiting for the first, head
coach Tony Jones said, and
neither was able to get by the
second as the Lady Bulldogs
swept both teams. Warner
Robins lost 25-20 and 25-18
while the Lady Bears fell 25-
23 and 25-18. (It wasn’t the
first time Houston County
had lost to Mary Persons, as
you’ll read.)
In the match pitting the
Lady Bears against Warner
Robins, Houston County
won the match two games
to one.
It lost the first game to the
host 25-15 but then rallied
for 27-25 and 15-13 victo
ries.
“Our girls did not play
their best against them,”
said Demonettes head
coach Kristin Chafin. “Both
matches were a blessing
in disguise, though,” she
added. “They revealed our
weaknesses and allowed for
creativity on the court.
”We now have more pur
pose for our practice, and we
can only get better from the
defeats. Luckily, these were
not region games.”
As far as the Lady Bears,
Jones said the squad fought
hard but just came up short.
After losing the first game to
Warner Robins and trailing
8-2 in the early part of the
second, he called timeout.
“Senior captain Elizabeth
Brighton told the girls we
needed to be the first to 10
and play a game within the
game,” he said. “We have
used that to help us focus
last year and this year when
we need too.
“That worked well as we
were the first to 10, 15, 20
and then won. We did the
same thing in the third
and decisive game of the

Elizabeth and junior
Nicole Williams led the Lady
Bears in service points on the
night, Jones said, and their
front-row hitters Brighton,
Williams, Morgan Hollars,
Leah Justin and Jennifer
Doebreiner “had several
key blocks to help us gain
momentum,” he added.
