Perry Firefighter Kirk Crumpton sits as his blood pres
sure is measured at the Houston County Emergency
Communications Center in Warner Robins Tuesday.
Crumpton, along with more than 50 specialists from the
Central Georgia Search and Rescue Team, known as
GSAR, was sent to Baton Rouge, Louisiana Tuesday to
assist in Hurricane Katrina cleanup and recovery efforts.

Michael Buckner with the
Houston County Fire
Department said goodbye to
his wife, Amber, a former
member of the GSAR team,
and his 6-month-old daugh
ter, Rosemary, before head
ing off.
“I really don’t know exact
ly where we’re headed,” he
said. “But I know we are
going to see some of the
worst-hit spots in
Louisiana.”
Amber Buckner said she
understood why her hus
band was leaving and she
respects what the group will
be doing to help hurricane
victims.
The group met outside the
Houston County Emergency
Communications Center in
Warner Robins Tuesday
morning, packing clothes,
supplies and equipment into
trucks and buses before
going through a physical
examination that included a
blood pressure test and
shots to prevent tetanus and
hepatitis-A. Nine members
of the Villa Rica-based K-9
Search and Rescue Team
headed to Baton Rouge
Tuesday, with eight dogs
trained to search for trapped
victims and recover the
dead. Tracy Sargent with
the group said that the dogs

“I also want to work with
the city’s management team
to use our utilities, zoning
and code enforcement tools
to insure that the urban
landscape next to Robins Air
Force Base remains at the
highest possible quality,”
Havrilla said.
He first moved to Warner
Robins in 1960 as part of an
Air Force family. He gradu
ated from Warner Robins
High School in 1963.
Havrilla works at Robins
Air Force Base and his wife
Donna is a teacher at
Northside High School.

Houston County

Director Jimmy Williams
said the team will head to
the fire training grounds on
the LSU campus for nine
days, with rotations of fresh
GSAR specialists to follow, if
needed.
“This is the largest test of
this unit,” Williams said.
The group previously sent
25 men to a field training
session in Virginia, and the
group was deployed to the
G-8 Summit on Sea Island
last summer.
“They are going to see
things they have never seen
before,” he said. “We are
already preparing to help
them go through counseling
after the experience.”
Although Williams him
self is not going with the
team, at least 54 specialists
are headed to Louisiana.
Chief Robert Singletary of
the Warner Robins Fire
Department will lead the
group, composed of repre
sentatives from eight differ
ent Middle Georgia public
safety agencies. Singletary

GSAR group itself is made

a great place to work, play,
and do business,” he said.
“This city has given me
much - not only in material
terms - but the values that
are prevalent in the commu
nity. For me personally, pub
lic service is a way that I can
give back in the same man
ner that we benefit from the
legacy of the great people
who made Warner Robins
what it is today.
“I pledge to work coopera
tively with those who want
to make Warner Robins
even better,” Havrilla said.
Havrilla served as a city
councilman from 1976 to
1992 when he resigned to
make an unsuccessful run
for mayor. The Rev. Jeffery
Walker has already
announced his intention to
run for the Post 1 seat.
Incumbent Matt Stone has
yet to announce his inten
