Similar to a bucket brigade, Warner Robins firefighters, unloaded, bagged and handed out a vanload of smoked Boston butts
Thursday at the Wellston Center. Firefighters cooked the butts at the Training Center and transported them for pickup all day.

position to give something
back.”
Harley said that his serv
ice as city administrator
makes him uniquely quali
fied to be mayor.
“While I was city adminis
trator I was able to sit back
and see just what the job
demands,” he said. “Since I
am retired, I will be able to
give the job the time it
demands. While the office of
Centerville mayor is paid
only part-time, it really
needs a full-time person. In
the past the mayor and
three of the councilmen had
full-time jobs and there was
n’t really anyone at city hall
to answer citizens’ ques
tions during the day.”
The position of city
administrator has not been
filled since his resignation,
and Harley said that filling
the slot would not be a pri
ority if he were elected.
“I would not treat it as a
priority, but I would not
stand in the way of someone
being hired,” he said. “I
have served in the position
so I think I can fill that job
as well as mayor if neces
sary.”
Harley said that infra
structure improvement
would be one of his priori
ties in office.
“We need to improve our
existing sewer system,” he
said. “We have too many
breaks in the sewer system
that are letting in ground
water. That means we have
to pay for Warner Robins to
treat that groundwater like
it is sewage. We also need to
extend sewer lines to other
areas in order to encourage
balanced growth.”
Harley said he would like
to see Houston Lake Road
five-laned all the way north
from Centerville to Ga. 49.
“The only future growth
area for Centerville is to the
north and we need to pro
vide the infrastructure for
WR firm accepting items for hurricane relief
that growth, or we will be
overwhelmed,” he said. “We
need to look into building a
high school in the northern
part of the county. Future
growth here will soon over
run Northside.”
He added that he wishes
to continue Mayor Brand’s
efforts to renovate the
“downtown” area of
Houston County’s smallest
municipality.
“I would like to see more
citizens take an interest in
the community,” Harley
said. “We now have a small
group of business people
who run things and we need
to get more people to give
their time and talent to
Centerville.”
Harley said he is proud of
the people who work for the
city.
“We have a great group of
department heads and
employees down at City
Hall,” he said. “Our police
department is excellent and
it has been honored fre
quently for its efficiency and
professionalism. Our fire
department has grown
tremendously and we are
looking to building new fire
halls off Dunbar Road and
(U.S.) Highway 41.”
Harley said he would like
to see something done to
provide senior citizens with
a new recreation center.
“We have 135 senior citi
zens who currently meet at
City Hall and we need to get
together and build them a
new center,” he said. “We
have land near City Hall to
build it on and we just need
to get out and work to gath
er the money needed to
build it.
“I think that Centerville
has a bright future and I
want to help make it a reali
ty”

the Green Street fire station the next day.
“People had had nothing but good
things to say about the butts,” Lunceford
said.
The smoked and wrapped Boston butts
were sold for S2O each, with barbecue
sauce available in pints and quarts for $3
and $5.
The proceeds from the sale as well as
those of boot drives from the past three
weeks and other fund-raisers was given to
MDA Monday during the annual Jerry
Lewis Labor Day Telethon.
Warner Robins Fire Chief Robert
Singletary said last year the firefighters
collected over $130,000, and “about 70
percent of the money raised came from
the boot drive.”
“We raised more than any other depart
ment is the state for each of the past 10
years,” Singletary said. “Last year put
over $1.5 million since we started.”
“We’ve ! been told, we raised more than
any non-union department in the coun
ty,” Singletary said.
