MARIETTA - At 11,000

panels, the “Life of Christ”
depicts the life and ascen

the 1986 edition of Guinness
World Records as tho.-largest

But few have seen the
artwork, created by Atlanta
native Jackson Bailey II in
the 1960 s and finished in
1970.
That’s because it spent
decades in a storage build

now Bailey’s son, Jackson

the painting and then redis

in a new museum.
“This is my life’s work to

said Jackson Bailey 111, also
president of the nonprof

Museum Foundation.
In a two-year project,
Marietta-based Avery
Gallery will restore the
cyclorama. Each of its pan

of Fiberglas cloth. About 10
panels arrived Wednesday
morning from Florida. Five
tractor trailer trucks are
expected to haul the panels
to the gallery.
Jackson Bailey 11, who died
in 2004, was a state investi
gator who also designed the
current DeKalb County seal
and flag. He discovered a
passion for art at age 5 when
he had polio. Bailey pledged
to create a painting to glo

town Atlanta, where one of
the cyclorama’s panels was
slashed during a burglary.
Later, the artist donated
it to a group in Orlando,
Fla., which went bankrupt.
Before Jackson Bailey 111
- owned-his fatherk work, the
painting had been Owned by
Herbert G. Brown, former
chairman of Checkers Drive-
In Restaurants Inc.
The restoration is the first
project of its size the gallery
has committed to under
take, said gallery owner
Shae Avery. Neither Avery
or Jackson Bailey 111 could
say how much it will cost to
restore the painting, Which
was appraised at $3 million
in 1980.
“The size is impressive,
but we know we can do
it,” Avery said. The gal
lery regularly assists with
maintenance of the nearly
16,000 square-foot “Battle
of Atlanta” cyclorama - in
Grant Park. Other cyclo
ramas that still exist in
North America include the
1884 Gettysburg Cyclorama
that depicts the major Civil
War battle in Gettysburg,
Pa., and the Cyclorama of
Jerusalem in Quebec City,
Canada.
To help pay for the paint
ing’s restoration and muse
um construction costs, the
Bailey family is seeking
donations from the public.
The foundation also is sell
ing porcelain plates, T-shirts
and puzzles on its Web site.
The planned museum will
not only feature the cyclo
rama but will also display
other pieces of art.
It also will allow people to
learn about the artist and
“bring a piece of the Holy
Land here,” Jackson Bailey
111 said.
