ALABAMA —Edmond Knowles of Flomaton (pop.
1,588) set a world record when he cashed in his 38-year
penny collection last June. The pennies, stored in four 55-
gallon and three 20-gallon barrels, yielded $13,084.59,
the largest personal penny cash-in ever recorded.
ARKANSAS —Completed in 1914, the 23-mile
Dollarway Road at Pine Bluff (pop. 55,085) was among
the nation’s first rural concrete highways. The name came
from the sl-per-linear foot it cost to pave the road.
FLORIDA —In 1910, the town of Boggy was re
named Niceville (pop. 11,684), and then renamed Val
paraiso in 1919- When New Valparaiso sprang up and
caused confusion, the town lived up to its name and be
came Niceville again. Valparaiso (pop. 6,408) dropped
the “New.”
GEO RGlA —Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites,
one of the nation’s oldest state park systems, celebrates
its 75th anniversary this year. The system originated in
1931 with the joining of Indian Springs State Park and
Vogel State Park.

KENTUCKY —The Mike Fink Restaurant on the
Ohio River in Covington (pop. 43,370) originally was
the 1940 s John W. Hubbard stemwheeler, a boat built
to tow oil barges. The floating restaurant, named for
legendary 19th-century keelboat captain Mike Fink, is
listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
LOUISIANA —The sawmill town of Long Leaf,
in operation from 1892 to 1969, survives today as the
Southern Forest Heritage Museum with its original
equipment and buildings, including the sawmill, planer
mill, a company house and commissary.
MISSISSIPPI— Aqua Yacht Harbor, on Pickwick
Lake near the mouth of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Water
way, in luka (pop. 3,059) is one of the nation’s laigest inland
marinas with 325 covered and 200 dry slips for vessels up
to 120 feet.
NORTH CAROLINA— In 1946,Ehwod’Budc”
PetTy ofTaylorsville (pop. 1,799) invented the popular Spoon
plug fishing lure. Before witnesses, he cast the Spoonphjg 30
times—and caught 30 bass, ftrry died at age 90 last August.

SOUTH CAROLINA— The Church of the
Holy Apostles in Barnwell (pop. 5,035) was used by Union
troops as a stable for their horses during the Civil War. The
congregation removed the stained-glass windows before
the church’s capture and replaced them after the war.
TENNESSEE —The state’s first permanent settler
was William Bean, who arrived from Virginia in 1769
and built a cabin on Boone’s Creek close to its junction
with the Watauga River, near present-day Johnson City
(pop. 55,469).
VIRGINIA —CaIIed the ‘Great Seal of Virginia,” a
cross-eyed, mixed-breed dog named Seal served as mascot
for the University ofVirginia at Charlottesville (pop. 45,049)
in the 19405. The pooch had free run of campus and local
restaurants had signs: "No dogs alkrwed (except Seal).”
WEST VIRGINIA —In 1869, Swiss and German
immigrants settled Helvetia in Randolph County, and the
mountain village clings to its culture with local fare and
festivals. The original Swiss flag brought by the settlers is
housed in the town's historical museum.
