New traditions for New Year's Eve More often than not, I turn down dates for New Year’s Eve because I have my own tradition that makes that evening one of my favorites of the year. After the harried busy ness of the Christmas sea son, which now begins with Thanksgiving, I want to have a quiet evening. My idea of perfect happiness is to settle down by a roaring fire, order in way too much Mexican food and watch a couple of good movies. It’s my gift to me. So when he called the other day and asked me to join him for a black tie glitzy event, I thought first of that wonderful quietness I nor mally enjoy on the last night of the year as a tribute to all my other non-quiet 364 nights. “WelUlll,” I began, edging toward explaining, as I do annually, about my beloved tradition. Cole Brannen Creel Tim and Charlotte Creel announce the birth of a 0 Christmas treehouse My older son had part of his Christmas come a little early this year. For the bet ter part of a year he has been lobbying for a tree house, and now his efforts are bearing fruit. “I’m getting a treehouse for Christmas and it’s too big to even go under the Christmas tree!” he has been fond of telling anyone who will listen. It has been a very exciting time in the Martin house hold, and I do believe it’s been as much fun for two big boys as it has been for the five year old one. My hus band designed and built the house with the help of his daddy. It looks suspiciously like a platform deer stand with some extra siding and a roof, since they have experi ence in building that type of structure. For a couple of weeks, they have been hard at work, out in the cold and the wind, to get it done in time for Christmas. The soon to be owner has been supervising as much as possible, mak ing plans all the way. “We can spend the night in the treehouse, Daddy. You can come too, Dadah!” He even went so far as to invite one of his granddaddy’s friends to join them. It has a ladder, a bucket on a rope to use to pull up any necessary accessories to the fun, and a swing on a zip line for a quick escape. That’s my favorite part. My husband made the swing and attached the cable - going towards the house, our son said, so that when I call him for supper he can jump on and zip to the house. When it was time for him to take his first ride, he was a little leery. We started him out easy, and it was pure joy to see the scared look on his face turn to delight. He is already planning to invite that no woman should ever be called upon to make - a sacred night of peaceful retreat or the opportunity to prance around in a fancy dress and stunning stilettos. “Well,” I repeated, trying to buy time. He chuckled lightly, the kind of chuckle that a guy makes up because he doesn’t mean it. “Listen, if you keep beating around the bush, I’m gonna get my feelings hurt.” “It’s not you. It’s just, well, can I be honest?” I felt his wince across the phone. “Just for the record,” he replied, “I’m not always enamored with all of your moments of honesty. But go ahead. ” I laughed. You have to love such a guy. Then, I told him of my normal New Year’s Eve tradition. “You know, I’m thinking that sounds better than my offer. Want company?” 2005. Grandparents over all of his friends and cousins to enjoy it with him. I am glad that the joy of the treehouse will be shared, particularly since part of it was originally intended to be enjoyed in another way. My husband used composite decking (or “plood” as he calls it, since it’s a mix of plastic and wood) to make the floor and sides - the composite decking that I won about three years ago and thought would be turned into a sure enough deck. However, I gave up on that idea about two and a half years ago, and so suggested that my husband use the boards for the treehouse. “I was planning to,” he informed me. But when I look at the Christmas treehouse, I know they were boards well spent. When I watch the house become a fort, a jungle hide away, a pirate ship, or any number of places that exist only in our son’s - and even tually our younger son’s - imagination, I will know the boards were put to a much better use than an unimagi native deck. It’s already been a merry Christmas at my house. Is the treehouse perfect? No. But is it perfectly won derful? Absolutely. I wasn’t quite ready to give up the idea of sequins and rhinestones in exchange for a turtleneck and jeans. Then, I did what any woman would have done had she been in my high heels. I asked for more time. And like any man who has ever dealt with a woman who wanted her sequins and tur tlenecks, too, he agreed. I’ve always been told that superstition is that what ever you’re doing when the clock strikes midnight on Dec. 31 is what you’ll do for the rest of the year. Not true. I’ve try kissing, sleep ing, praying, talking, visit ing and listening. And none of the aforementioned, have I spent the next year doing exclusively. But one New Year’s tradition I’m stick ing with is eating black-eyed peas and collard greens. Last year, Mama noticed that I was swallowing them whole - with a yucky look on my face - and she said, “You have to chew them. If you don’t chew them, it don’t count and you won’t make any money.” “No, no, no,” I replied. “You can’t make up the rules.” “Why not?” my sister asked. “You do.” Good point. That’s why I’m thinking that this year, I’m going to have a quiet black tie event at my house. It’ll be small and intimate with lots of Mexican food, a good movie and a fabulous black sequined dress.
