Great cast in WRLT production of 'The Wisteria Bush'
By JANE WINSTON
HHJ Theatre Critic
The WRLT is presenting Jo
Vander Voort’s comedy/drama
“The Wisteria Bush” through
Feb. 25. The play focuses on
friendships among the young
and old in Coleridge, Ala. And
of course where there are
long-time friendships, there
are long-time conflicts. “The
Wisteria Bush” is permeated
with conflicts and unfulfilled
dreams which moves this play
into the drama side of the
house - with lots of comedic
lines; for me, a winning combi
nation! Jerry Reppert and Ed
Vesely, once again, assembled
a terrific set; Paula Day Johns
chose her cast well, and she
and her crew have done a fine
job with her first show.
The play takes place over
a two-day period in Mama
Wallace’s living/dining room
where a committee has been
assembled to vote on the com
munity’s homecoming queen
who has to be a graduate of
the school and must be nomi
nated by the citizenry ... but
no signature required! Mama
Wallace’s daughter, Ruthie
Ann, whose husband ran off
with a “woman of ill repute,”
is seemingly the chairman of
this committee.
Another committee member
is Acia Darling who is stacked,
proud of it, and - with relish
- flaunts it. She is married to
a man (who possibly lost his
manhood in “the war”) who
does not trust her (possibly
justified), and wants to control
her every movement.
The third member of the
committee is Sybil Parker who
is wrapped up - real tight - in
humoring her friends as she
pretends to lose weight wor
rying about carbohydrates as
she devours cookies, potato
chips, Fritos - if she could find
them - and doughnuts.
