ALABAMA— LittIe River is the nation’s longest
mountaintop river, flowing almost its entire length
atop Lookout Mountain in northeast Alabama. The
river is protected within the 14,000-acre Little River
Canyon National Preserve, with its spectacular views of
waterfalls, forested uplands, canyon rims and bluffs.
ARKANSAS —Designated a national scenic by
way last September, Talimena Scenic Drive winds
more than 50 miles over mountaintops in the Oua
chita National Forest from Talihina, Okla. (pop.
1,211), to Mena (pop. 5,637). The road peaks on Rich
Mountain in Arkansas.
FLORIDA —Monroe County Deputy Sheriff Guy
Bradley has been called Americas first environmental
martyr. He was murdered in 1905 while protecting
wading birds from plume hunters, and his death led to
laws to protect the birds’ nesting colonies.
G EO RGIA —Tom Forkner and Joe Regers Sr. opened
the first Waffle House in 1955 in Avondale Estates (pop.
2,609) to serve their neighbors. Today, more than 1,400
Waffle House restaurants feed diners in 25 states.

KENTUCKY —Established in 1823, the Ken
tucky School for the Deaf in Danville (pop. 15,477)
was the fourth such school in the United States, and
the first state-supported public school for the deaf in
the nation.
LOUISIANA —lt took more than an hour to
land the whopper, but Keith Day of Zachary (pop.
11,275) set a state record when he pulled in a 110-
pound blue catfish from the Mississippi River near
St. Francisville (pop. 1,715) last April.
MISSISSIPPI— The Mississippi gopher frog,
which once hopped in the longleaf pine forests of
the lower coastal plain in several Southeastern states,
today is an endangered species found only in the
DeSoto National Forest in Harrison County.
NORTH CAROLINA —-The North Caro
lina Transportation Museum is on the site of the
former Southern Railway Co.’s steam locomotive
repair shops in Spencer (pop. 3,355). A 37-stall
roundhouse includes 25 locomotives and other
railroad exhibits.

McGrrmick (pop. 1,489) were named for Cyrus McCor
mick (1809-1884), inventor of the mechanical grain
reaper, who donated the land for the town.
TENNESSEE— In the late 1890 s, “Beautiful
Jim Key” of Shelbyville (pop. 16,105) entertained
crowds with his ability to do arithmetic, read, tell
time and sort mail. The homely, “educated" horse
was trained by William Key, a self-taught veteri
narian.
VIRGINIA —Dodona Manor, the estate of Gen.
George C. Marshall in Leesburg (pop. 28,311),
opened last December after a $7 million restoration.
European countries helped by the Marshall Plan,
an economic recovery program after World War 11,
contributed to the restoration.
WEST VIRGINIA —The Louis Bennett Public-
Library in Weston (pop. 4,317) is housed in an 1875
Victorian 17-room mansion, a gift from Mrs. Louis
Bennett to honor her husband and son, who were
active in business and politics.
