Perry chamber building
resource center
By MIKE GEORGE
HHJ Staff Writer
It’s nothing more than
a storage closet now, but
the Perry Area Chamber of
Commerce has big plans for
converting a room at the
Perry Welcome Center into
a resource center for entre
preneurs.
In January, Perry was
named an Entrepreneurial
Friendly Community by
the Georgia Department
of Economic Development,
stemming from a lengthy and
in-depth application process
by the chamber’s business
development committee.
The designation identifies
Perry as a community wel
come to new business, but
also opens up opportuni
ties to spur business growth
in the area through state
grants.
The chamber is currently

That’s not all, either. A
third Ellie Avery mystery
is under contract, with the
series called the “Mom
Zone” mysteries.
Also, there’s a bonus in
these books. Just as some
of the current crop of ama
teur sleuth mysteries (or
“cozies” ) include recipes,
this one includes organizing
tips for packing, moving and
unpacking at the end of each
chapter.
This brand new book,
with its twists and turns,
its secrets exposed, and its
light touch (no sadism or
overt sexual episodes here)
will appeal to mystery
fans looking for a couple
of evenings of escape, but
should be a special treat for
young moms who’ve dealt
with babies who wake up
all through the night and
military wives who know
all about new homes full of

the storage room into a “one

interested in opening new
businesses in Perry. Megan
Smith, president and CEO
of the chamber, said up to

the grant.
If approved, the more than
70 square foot storage room
will likely be repainted, and
will be outfitted with a com

shelving. Use of the room
will be scheduled by the
chamber, only during regular
business hours. Smith said
the chamber hopes to begin
work on the room in April,
with an opening in May.
Smith said the chamber can
re-apply for the same grant
from the state in the future,
allowing them to enhance the
resource center further.

Lots of work remains for General Assembly
By DOUG GROSS
The Associated Press
ATLANTA - When law
makers returned Monday
for the 38th day of their 40-
day legislative session, with
three days left to go, they
had plenty of work left to do
and plenty of questions still
unanswered.
Many of the Legislature’s
key issues this year, from an
overhaul of illegal immigra
tion law to an effort to crack
down on people who sexually
abuse children, have already
cleared both the House and
Senate.
But hashing out versions
of those plans and pulling
together two drastically dif
ferent drafts of the state’s
$18.6 billion budget is
expected to mean some long
days ahead at the Capitol
and the possibility of the
final day of the session being
delayed beyond this week.
Add scores of more low
profile proposals that’s
yet to be approved in both
chambers, and you’ve got
the recipe for the flurry of
activity that traditionally
marks each legislative ses
sion’s final days.
That rush of lawmaking,
some say, can allow unpopu
lar bills to sneak past har
ried lawmakers who, try
as they might, can’t keep a
close eye on everything.
“It seems like something
slips through every year,”
said Sen. Tim Golden, of
Valdosta, the Senate’s
Democratic caucus chairman
and a 16-year statehouse

Many of the bills publicly
pushed by Republican Gov.
Sonny Perdue _ including
a requirement that .school
systems spend 65 percent of
their money in classrooms
and an income tax credit for
people who donate property
for conservation have already
cleared the Legislature.
Others, like an effort to
limit government’s ability
to seize private property for
public uses, still must be
worked out because of dif
fering versions approved in
the House and Senate.
“We’re pleased that much
of the governor’s legislative
agenda has already passed,”
said Perdue spokesman Dan
McLagan. “We’ll be keep
ing an eye on the budget
process, of course, and the
governor’s eminent domain
legislation.”
The measure targeting so
called sexual predators and
another denying many state
services to illegal immigrants
also must be reconciled.
The Senate added a pro
vision to the sex offenders
measure that requires some
convicted child molesters
to have that fact printed
on their driver’s licens
es. Meanwhile, the House
tacked on a requirement to
the immigration bill for a

When the House and

a compromise. That version
must then be approved in
both chambers.
Of all the legislation still
unsettled, the state budget
may be the trickiest. Leaders
in both chambers definitely
would like to wrap up their
session this week, but may
not be able to if they can’t
agree on how to spend tax
payer money.
“It all depends on how
much progress we make on
the budget,” Senate Majority
Leader Tommie Williams,

about the week’s schedule.

on the spending plan, are
far sharper than they were
last year _ the first time
since Reconstruction that
Republicans controlled both
the House and Senate.
“We’ve got a lot of differ
ences, not just over money
but over policy,” he said.
He said the Senate’s ver

crafted first in the House,
shifts around millions of dol

creating new ones.
“Those are decisions
that ought to be worked on
together when they’re that
big,” said Harbin.
