Statewide system to ensure all newborns receive health screenings
Special to the HHJ
Gov. Sonny Perdue, sur
rounded by child healthcare
advocates, signed into law
today H 81066, a bill estab
lishing a statewide screen
ing system to test newborns
for genetic metabolic disor
ders that could affect their
health and well-being. The
legislation was sponsored
by Representative Judy
Manning and carried in
the Senate by Sen. Renee
Unterman.
“Our young children
deserve the very best start
in life,” said Governor Sonny
Perdue. “Newborn screen
ings help detect potential
disorders early so that we
can give children the best
chance of reaching their full
est potential.”
Newborn screening is
designed to prevent sickness
and developmental disabili
ties in babies. The bill estab
lishes a screening program
in the Department of Human
Resources’ Division of Public
Health. The comprehensive,
statewide system will assure
that all newborns receive
important testing for disor
ders by the Georgia Public
Health Laboratory. The lab
oratory will follow-up with
the families of infants with
results for diagnosis, treat
ment and family counseling.
Judge delays
qualifying in
redrawn
districts
Associated Press
ATLANTA - A federal
judge extended qualifying by
a week for candidates seek
ing to run in three Senate
districts and 13 House dis
tricts that were redrawn this
year in a Republican-backed
move.
The judge also granted an
emergency hearing for state
Rep. Jane Kidd, who filed
a complaint this week to
block a new Senate map that
would divide her hometown
- a Democratic stronghold
- into two majority GOP dis
tricts.
Earlier this year, the
Republican-controlled
Legislature approved a new
map that splits Athens-
Clarke County into two
Senate districts. Kidd, who
had announced plans to seek
an open Senate seat, and
other Democrats accused
Republicans of making the
change to give their party an
advantage.
Kidd’s case will hinge
on an emergency hearing
Tuesday in Atlanta’s feder
al courthouse. Win or lose,
though, she said Friday she
still plans to run.
“It was a tough decision.
I felt confident that I could
have been re-elected in my
House seat, but I kind of gave
up that confidence for the
. risk of a district that wasn’t
drawn in my favor,” she said.
Until now Georgia
screened for only 13 of 29
potential conditions. This
legislation brings Georgia
in line with the American
College of Medical Genetics’
recommendation that states
screen babies for 29 meta
bolic and genetic conditions.
Testing for all 29 disorders
will save approximately S7O
