The band played “Sonny-Be-
Good” and families lined up for
plates of barbecue Saturday for
Gov. Sonny Perdue’s homecoming
and kickoff rally for his 2006 re
election campaign.
Perdue, who started his politi
cal career as a state senator from
Bonaire, was elected Governor in
2002 and has subsequently led
Georgia Republicans to a takeover
of the General Assembly.
He faces one opponent, Ray
Mcßerry, in the primary July 18,
but is expected to win and chal
lenge either Secretary of State
Cathy Cox or Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor
in the general election. ,
Perdue, who arrived in his cam
paign van after the crowd had
gathered, spent a good part of
his time at the rally working the
crowd, shaking hands, holding
children for photos and greeting
old friends.
On the bandstand, he was intro
duced by former Congressman
Mac Collins, who is making a bid
for the Bth District Seat in the U.S.
House of Representatives.
Perdue spoke at length about
the difficult decisionsthe personal
affection he and his wife, Mary, feel
for their Houston County friends,
saying, “Your support means so
much, especially your prayers.”
