From page 1B
Wilkerson coaxed the next
hitter into a groundball out
to Mark Irwin at third to
preserve the win.
Scoring-wise, Houston
County’s two runs in the
second came via Vasquez and
Brad Jackson. The first sin
gled and the next hit a home
run to left-center.
Ben Collins started things
off in the Bears’ five-run
fourth with a walk. Southpaw
Alex Blain then brought him
home with a home run to
right - there were five long
balls in the first game and
two in the second (details on
it to follow).
Back-to-back-to-back sin
gles from Chris Tessenair,
Irwin and Brown, with a key
error added in, enabled the
Bears to score three more.
In the sixth, Irwin led off
the inning with a single and
scored when Vasquez hit the
fence - and in the gap in
left-center for a double.
Jackson followed that with
a ground-rule double, also in
the gap in left-center to score
Vasquez.
As far as Wilkerson, his
complete game included 11
hits to the opposition, along
with six strikeouts.
BEARS 8, WOLVERINES 7
Chase Brown survived
a one-hitter through six
innings to help lead Houston
County to an 8-7 win over
Union Grove. That victory
clinched a quarterfinal berth
for the Bears and marked
the farthest the team has
ever gone in school history.
In fact, only one other
team in Houston County has
ever made it to the Elite
Eight and that was Perry,
which as it just so happens
was coached by Gentry at
the time.
As far as Brown, “sur
vived” and “one-hitter” nor
mally don’t go together, but
in his case, they did.
For starters, he survived
hitting four batters, and get
ting hit himself. In the case
of the first, it was pretty
clear they were unintention
al - he struggled with con
trol until the late innings,
and in the case of two batter,
he “dinged” them with two
strikes. In the case of the
second (him being hit), it
was also pretty clear it was
intentional.
Or, at leasf that’s what
the umpires believed - a
little “high-fiving” by the
Wolverines didn’t help their

cause. They called time, held
a meeting with the coaches
and warned both sides.
Brown, on the other hand,
after “plunking” the first bat
ter to start the game, worked
around it in the first.
He wasn’'t able to work
around an error that allowed
a man to reach, a walk,
another hits batsman and a
fielding error that let the ball
roll to the fence, however,
in the second. That enabled
Union Grove to score three
and cut Houston County’s
lead to 5-3. The Bears, who
were visitors, had scored two
in the first and three in the
second.
Brown started off the third
by hitting another batter, this
one Riehn who had switched
to pitcher for Game 2 (he
was also only 1-3 against
Brown, and that a single).
Later in the inning, he hit
another and he also walked
a batter.
But, he also left the bases
loaded with no runs scoring.
By that time, it was look
ing like an early night for
him. Instead, he got stron
ger and more importantly,
more accurate.
He set the Wolverines
down in order in the fourth,
struck out “four” batters in
the fifth (one reached after,
on the third strike, the ball
got away from catcher Alex
Pender, who in turn had
replaced Ryan Beitler who
left in the fifth following a
low pitch that hurt him) and
struck out two of the three
he faced in a scoreless sixth.
Things got interesting for
him and the Bears in the
seventh.
Brown struck out the first
batter to start the inning
(his 11th) but then Riehn
singled, as did the next hit
ter. That also ended Brown’s
night.
Jackson relieved him and
promptly gave up a first
pitch single that, with an
error added in, enabled two
to score.
Following a strikeout, he
then gave up a home run.
That cut the Bears’ lead to
one - the final score - as
Jackson coaxed the next
batter to hit a grounder to
Vasquez, who scooped it up
and threw to first for the out
and the win.
As far as the Bears’ scor
ing, Vasquez, from the two
spot, singled, as did Jackson
and Wilkerson. Those, along
with an error, plated the first
two Houston County runs.

Alex Blain touches the plate following his two-run home run.
Brown walked, Vasquez
singled and Jackson hit a
home run to left to account
for three more in the second.
After three scoreless innings
by both, Tessenair singled
and scored when Vasquez hit
a home run (on the pitch
prior, the catcher dropped
his popup in foul territory).
Jackson then reached as
did Wilkerson and both were
driven home, finishing off
the Bears’ scoring, by Pender
who doubled down the line
to right.

THE HOUSTON HOME JOURNAL
From page 1B
(2001, ‘O2), who has
since moved out of state,
are the only other play
ers with multiple Mid-Am
titles.
Entries were open to
male amateur golfers age
25 or older as of Friday,
who belong to a GSGA
member club and are resi
dents of Georgia.
A total of 392 players
entered this year’s cham
pionship - 26 of them
exempt and 366 non
exempt. Non-exempt
players competed in one
of six statewide qualifiers
held in April for 118 spots
in the field.
The course will play at
6,904 yards and a par 72
for the event.
Membrila qualified
for the field April 10 at
Southern Hills Golf Club
in Hawkinsville, where he
shot a 79.
Scott Palmer of Perry
and Gregg Segars of
Warner Robins also con
tended at that venue but
neither qualified - even
though Palmer also shot
ai9.
Segars shot an 80 and
both are listed as alter
nates for the Mid-Am
championship.
In last year’s tourna
ment, Augusta’s Jefferson
Murray won his first
GSGA title with a one
stroke victory over fel
low Augustan Jeff Knox
at Coosa Country Club in
Rome last year.
After the tournament
was shortened to 36 holes
due to weather, Murray
carded a final-round 69 to
go with his opening score
of 67 for a 4-under 136.
Knox, despite a field
low 67 in the final round,
finished as the Mid-Am
runner-up for the third
straight year and fourth
time in the last five years.
Also this year, five for
mer Georgia Mid-Amateur
champions appear in
the 2006 field, including
Murray.
