Barbaro off to good start on road to recovery

There was more good news
Tuesday on Barbaro’s recov

“He’s actually better today
than he was even yesterday
and he was pretty good yes

said. “He’s walking very well
on the limb, absolutely nor
mal vital signs. He’s doing
very well.”
Barbaro was on his feet
in his stall, even scratch

hind leg just two days after

The surgery was per

“We’ve run the gamut of
emotions from the eupho

to the devastation of the
Preakness,” owner Roy
Jackson said. “The sad part
is that in Barbaro’s case, that
the American public won’t

though he ran so well in the
Kentucky Derby, we prob
ably didn’t see his greatest
race. But that’s water over
the dam. We're just glad
we jumped a hurdle here so

Richardson added that the
Jacksons’ main concern was
for the health of Barbaro, not
for the millions of dollars the
colt could make as a stallion
if he recovers completely.
“If this horse were a geld

done everything to save this
horse’s life,” Richardson said.

Gretchen Jackson added:
“My hope for him is that he

that means he’ll be a stal

for him.”

Jackson said.

of bad luck than ill-han

So, why swap?
Sure, Kahne’s the mar

in terms of potential sales
- and Jeremy ... well, he
might be able to sell a few
candy bars out of a box
(perhaps his future job).
Still, everybody knows
team success is such a deli

Why destroy it for no
apparent reason at all? Why
take away what looked to
be a great chance he could
make the Chase three years

Nix and his staff had
four months to ponder over
things with the Eagle per
sonnel and take into account
the losses from the 2005
senior class.
Some of those seniors
earned the opportunity to
continue playing football
by signing college scholar
ships.
Spring practice, Nix said,
gave them the opportunity
to try certain players with
varsity experience at new
positions with needs cre
ated by graduation.
Basically, he said it’s a
chance to give these Eagles
a head start at learning a
new position before summer
camp and fall practices.
Some players, like rising
senior linebacker Deontae
Jordan, aren’t going any
where, Nix said.
But with the defensive
secondary in need of some
reloading, other rising
seniors and returning start
ers like Mitchell Bell and
Mario Armstrong got some
work at this new slot plus
their original positions.
What it all boils down to,
though, is teaching funda
mentals.
“We always stress that,”
said Nix. “Some guys real-

ly stepped up. I would say
there were no major sur
prises. We still have a ways
to go and a lot of time to get
there.”
One would think that the
No. 1 topic of discussion on
the Northside practice field
was the championship game
loss to Statesboro on a field
goal in the last minute.
It was certainly a game
where the Eagles had a lot
of advantages except in
the areas where it counted
most turnovers and spe
cial teams.
But according to Nix, a
lot of the players involved
it that game - the seniors
- weren’t at spring practice
to bring the subject up.
What they do talk about,
the coach said, is what this
group of players out there
wants to accomplish and the
level of football play that is
expected out of Northside.
So now that this bit of
practicing is over, the Eagles
will take some time off to
focus on final exams.
The offseason weightlift
ing program begins June
12, and Nix said there will
be some drill work involved
along the way.
“Before we know it, it will
be Sept. 1,” he said. That
is the day of Northside’s
first regular season game
against Houston County
High School.
