At least five have
drowned in Georgia
over the weekend
ATLANTA (AP) At
least five people have
drowned across Georgia
over the Memorial Day
weekend, authorities said.
The latest victim was a
man who drowned in the
Ogeechee River on Sunday
in Bryan County in south
east Georgia.
The 20-year-old man,
who was not immediately
identified, was swimming
with friends when a cur
rent pulled him under in
waters 15 feet deep, county
Coroner Daniel Page said.
Also, authorities on
Sunday identified a man
who drowned at Turner
Lake in Newton County a
day earlier. Jesse Thornton,
43, of Conyers was at the
family reunion of a friend
when he drowned Saturday
afternoon.
Friday saw the drown
ing deaths of two teenage
brothers from Griffin and
a 45-year-old Tennessee
woman.
The brothers, who had
jumped off a dock into West
Point Lake, were pulled
out of the water Friday
afternoon by divers from
the Troup County Sheriffs
Department. Dominique
Andrews, 16, and Robrica
Andrews, 14, were accompa
nied by fellow church mem
bers and had just arrived at
the Holiday Marina when

they jumped off the dock
into water 8 to 10 feet deep.
“We were told they were
trying to touch the bottom,”
Troup County coroner
Jeffrey Cook said.
Hours later, the
Tennessee woman died in
Lake Allatoona, authori
ties said. She was identi

Nashville, Tenn. According
to Department of Natural

New fare gates
show more riders
ATLANTA (AP) The
Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid
Transit Authority is seeing
higher passenger counts at
train stations where it has
installed new, high-tech
gates meant to stop fare
evaders.
The numbers suggest that
as many as one in four train
riders may not have been
counted before.
The average weekday pas
senger count at the first
13 stations to get the new
gates rose from 43,783 in
April 2005 to more than
60,000 in April 2006, a 37
percent increase.
The nearly 6-foot gates
being installed at MARTA
stations replace the aging,
rickety turnstiles the rail
system had been using since
it began more than 25 years
ago.
