Second stripper goes on record
DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - A second
stripper in the Duke University rape case
told police early in their investigation
that the accuser was out of her sight for
only five minutes that night and that her
allegations were a “crock,” according to
a court papers.
The statement by Kim Roberts about
the March 13 lacrosse team party was
cited in a filing by lawyers for Reade
Seligmann, 20, one of three team mem
bers charged in the case.
According to a March 20 statement
written by a Durham police investigator,
Roberts “stated that she heard that (the
accuser) was sexually assaulted, which
she stated is a crock' and she stated
that she was with her the whole time
until she left."

LIFE
From page 18.
The baseballs may look
alike, but they react dif
ferently when leaving the
machine.
Even the way I feed the ball
will affect the height, and
even break, of the pitch.
The main challenge is set
ting the machine so that it
doesn’t have to be adjusted
for the different sizes of the
batters.
When I want the ball low,
I adjust the placement of
the ball when fed. Each ball
responds differently.
The batters vary their
responses. Some are stiff
with fear and stand like stat
ues until they have a panic
attack and swing.
Others aggressively
approach the batter’s box;
pound the plate with the
bat and then swing at any
thing near them. Theirs is
a false bravado. Inside they
tremble, but they hide the
fear through violence.
I can spot the true hitters,
the ones who want to hit the
ball, by the way they enter
the box.
Because I’ve learned the
vagaries of the baseballs, I
can feed the machine to put
the ball close to the same
place every time.
I’m like the players I
umpire. I find my comfort
zone and as a result of trial
and error, ultimately the
way we all learn, I can put
the ball close to the same

place every time.
Like the rest of the world.
I’m uncomfortable with
change. When I find a base
ball that works for me, I
keep it. If it’s fouled off,
an emotional pain leaves me
bereft, and I’ve been known
to hold up the game until I
get the ball back.
I have issues, but I can’t
afford to do anything about
it and the psychologist on
our staff earned her doctor
ate in cognitive learning.
I know how 1 got crazy;
I need to know how to get
over it.
Fortunately, there’s night
baseball. The kids care
about winning, but they care
more about hitting, running,
throwing and catching (not
necessarily in any particular
order) than they do about
their tender psychoses.
They don’t realize their
subconsciousness has been
molded; that their future
psychological problems are
being formed now. All they
know is: see the ball, hit the
ball, run to first and make
a left.
Good. In 40 years, I hope
they can stop play, look at
the sunset and have happy
thoughts.
Don’t grow up until the
money’s good.
Kentucky (June 17), he said,
adding he would not be able
to firm that up until this
weekend or early next week.
Heaven forbid if that, the
whole scenario, doesn’t work
out, Brannen said as a last
resort, he has been offered a
car chief job on a Busch car.
Either way, his return to
the limelight is just around
the corner.
