Stockbridge driver survives carjacking
ATLANTA (AP) A 22-
year-old man released
from prison a month ago
was arrested after he alleged
ly robbed a jewelry store and
then attempted a carjacking
while fleeing authorities.
Police said Alfred William
Hardy, 22, of College Park
faces several charges, includ
ing armed robbery. The
Georgia Department of
Corrections Web site said
Hardy was released a month
ago after serving almost four
years of a five-year Gwinnett
County sentence for robbery
by intimidation.
Authorities said the inci
dent began about 4:30 p.m.
Thursday when two men
snatched an item from a clerk
at Fancy That Fine Jewelry
in Henry County, then drove
north on 1-75. Henry County
sheriff’s Deputy Jeff Poole
spotted the car and pursued
it.
The men got off the inter
state at Ga. 138 in Clayton
County, but the car hit an
embankment. The men
jumped from the still-run
ning vehicle and one ran into
the woods.
The other man, bleeding
and unarmed, jumped into
an Olds Cutlass and started
screaming.
“He was screaming at me
to drive, just go,” said the
driver, Alexis Norals. “I was
screaming, ‘What are you
doing? Get out of my car!’"
Poole, the deputy, thrust
his pistol through the win
dow, pulled the man out of
the Cutlass and subdued
him with pepper spray, said
Henry County sheriff’s Mty.
Keith Mcßrayer.
The man who ran into the
woods has not been identi
fied.
Norals, who recently
moved to Georgia, said she’d
just left a job interview.
“I just moved here,” she
said, “but I think Pm gonna
go back to Mississippi.”

Brother ot slain Ga.
hostage says
justice served
ATLANTA (AP) The
brother of a Georgia man
who was taken hostage and
killed in Iraq said justice was
served in the death of Abu
Musab al-Zarqawi, the pre
sumed mastermind of Jack
Hensley’s killing.
“Pm thankful this guy
can’t hurt anybody else,”
Ty Hensley told The Atlanta
Journal-Constitution on
Thursday.
But Ty Hensley, who lives
in Charlotte, N.C., also said
he feels renewed sadness and
anger toward Al-Zarqawi.
“It is a personal thing,”
he said. “He desecrated my
family.”
Jack Hensley, an engi
neer from Marietta, was
working in Baghdad when
he was kidnapped on Sept.
16, 2004. He was killed days
later by a group of captors
allegedly led by al-Zarqawi.
A video of Hensley’s killing
was released on the Internet
showing him being beheaded
by hooded men.
When Ty Hensley spoke
to his brother’s widow,
Pati Hensley, on Thursday
after hearing the news of
Al-Zarqawi’s death, she told
him the number of days and
hours since her husband’s
murder that al-Zarqawi
remained alive.
Pati Hensley was relieved
by the news of al-Zarqawi’s

death, said Jake Haley, a
family friend who spoke to
reporters at her home at her
request. She left town to
avoid the media spotlight.
Jake Haley said he e-mailed
the news to Pati Hensley
before dawn Thursday.
Shortly afterward, he visited
the home and the two sat out
in the back deck talking.
“We cried,” Haley said.
“We were both happy about
it. It’s not just Jack. This guy
murdered a bunch of people.
There were a lot of really
nice Iraqi people that this
man killed the same way.”
Al-Zarqawi was killed by
a U.S. airstrike on a remote
area 30 miles northeast of
Baghdad. Al-Qaida in Iraq
confirmed al-Zarqawi’s
death and vowed to continue
its “holy war,” according to
a statement posted on a Web
site. The group has taken
responsibility for numer
ous mortar attacks, suicide
bombings, beheadings and
other violence against U.S.
and Iraqi targets in the past
few years.

Kaine’s decision came
moments after the U.S.
Supreme Court rejected a
request for a stay of execu
tion.
Percy Walton, 27, had been
scheduled to die by injection
at 9 p.m. at the Greensville
Correctional Center for the
1996 murders of three neigh
bors in Danville.
Kaine delayed the execu
tion for six months, until
Dec. 8, to allow for an
independent evaluation of
Walton’s mental condition
and competence.
“It would be imprudent
to either proceed with the
execution or grant clemen
cy without further review,”
Kaine said in a statement.
The U.S. Supreme denied
the application for the stay,
a petition to review the case
and an application for a
preliminary injunction that
was filed Thursday. Justices
John Paul Stevens, Ruth
Bader Ginsburg and Stephen
Breyer noted they would vote
to grant the stay.
Walton’s mental state has
been debated for nearly a
decade. His attorneys say he
keeps no personal effects in
his cell, except for a moun
tain of salt and pepper pack
ets.

Permissions mixup halts
plans for Barney Fife statue
MOUNT AIRY, N.C. (AP)
Two fans of “The Andy
Griffith Show” who planned
to erect a statue of Don
Knotts have new orders
from CBS: “Nip it!”
Network attorneys and
representatives of the
actor’s estate said this week
that proper permission had
not been granted for the
project.
Tom Hellebrand and Neal
Shelton were trying to raise
$35,000 to put a statue in
Mount Airy model for
the town of Mayberry as
a tribute to Knotts, who
portrayed the bumbling
Barney Fife on the popular
show.
Knotts died on Feb. 24 at
the age of 81 from pulmo
nary and respiratory com
plications.
The two worked out
arrangements with the city
for placing the statue, and
thought they’d gotten a
green light from CBS Corp.,
which owns the rights to
the show’s characters.
But Hellebrand said he
received a letter this week
from a second CBS attorney
demanding that the project
be halted.
Mallory Levitt explained
to Hellebrand and The
Mount Airy News that,
while Paramount/CBS
owned the rights to the
character of Barney Fife,
the group didn’t have the
authority to give permis
sion for a likeness of Don
Knotts.
“That right belongs to the
Knotts estate,” she said.
Levitt told Hellebrand she
contacted the actor’s estate
and business associates of
Andy Griffith, who is still
living, and none wanted to
go through with the project.
“We believed we had all
the approvals and OKs we
needed and that’s the only
reason we went ahead,”
Hellebrand said. “We never
meant to hurt or offend or
take advantage of anyone.
We just wanted to honor
