Georgia forces game 3; Tech
The Associated Press
ATHENS - Eight home
runs in one game shoved
Georgia to elimination’s
edge. A pair of timely home
runs kept the Bulldogs from
falling.
Jason Jacobs and Bobby
Felmy each hit homers and
Georgia came from behind
to beat South Carolina 11-5
on Sunday at Foley Field to
even the best-of-three Super
Regional 1-1.
The teams were to play a
decisive third game Monday
(results pending) for one of
eight College World Series
berths.
“It’s amazing what these
kids continue to do,” Georgia
coach David Perno said. “In
an elimination game, and
with the type of start we got
off to, I thought it was going
to be a tough day. But our
offense got going and played
to its identity.”
A day after South Carolina
hit eight home runs, includ
ing an NCAA record-tying
five in a row in the second
inning, Jacobs’ two-run shot
to left field in the top of
the fourth inning dented the
Gamecocks’ four-run lead.
After Matthew Dunn’s
sacrifice-bunt RBI tied it
and Ryan Peisel gave the
Bulldogs (46-21) their first
lead of the series on a wild
pitch, Felmy led off the fifth
inning with a first-pitch
blast to straight-away cen
ter field to make it 6-4. It
was Felmy’s first home run
in 41 games.
“They threw up the five
spot and we never got back
in it,” Gamecocks coach Ray
PERRY
From page 1B
broke the game open with
six runs in the bottom half.
Macon had runners on first
and third when a fly ball
was caught in right field for
the second out. The runner
on third had to hurry back
to his base, but was able
to score on an error on the
relay throw.
What followed were three
hits, a walk and a wild pitch
for five more runs before
Thigpen took over in relief
to get the third out on his
first pitch.
Perry scored the last three
runs of the contest as J.R.
Lassiter had a two-out RBI
single in the sixth and Jones
hit a two-run home run in
the seventh.

Tanner said. “We’re disap
pointed, but we’re going to
flush this (loss), focus on
tomorrow and put together
a great game.”
Georgia starter Brooks
Brown (8-4) gave up four
runs in the first three
innings, but settled and
retired nine of the next 11
hitters he faced. The junior
righty, who was the 20th
pitcher selected in last
week’s major league draft,
allowed four hits and struck
out six in six innings.
Snatching the lead charged
Brown, he said.
“I didn’t get the quality
start I wanted, but if I kept
them at three or four runs
and with the offense we had,
I knew we had a chance,”
Brown said. “I got in the
hole, but they gave me the
lead and it kept building and
gave me more confidence out
there.”
South Carolina start
er Mike Cisco (7-5) didn’t
survive the fourth inning.
The freshman, who
threw 134 pitches against
Evansville in last weekend’s
Charlottesville Regional,
allowed five earned runs and
seven hits.
“I made a couple of mis
takes, and when you make
mistakes to a good hitting
team that’s what happens,”
Cisco said. “They got some
momentum and that was
that.”
Similar to Saturday,
South Carolina jumped to
a 3-0 lead with two outs in
the first inning, thanks to
Andrew Crisp’s RBI double
outburst with eight in a row
before the game ended after
five innings due to the time
limit.
Northside touched up
Cougar pitching for five runs
in the first inning before
the first out was recorded.
Daniel Sandoval and Chris
Barnard ripped back-to-back
doubles, and Kevin Gifford
did them one base better
with an RBI triple. J.C. Cook
also doubled for an RBI, and
after a walk and an error
Andrew Holliday completed
the scoring spree with a sin-’
gle.
Though the Eagles left
the bases loaded in the first,
they came back with two in
the second.
Sandoval led off with a hit,
stole second base and scored
on an error. The Cougars
would turn a double play
with the bases loaded, but
Kyle McArthur delivered
a two-out single for a 7-0
lead.
The Northside bats pound
ed out four hits for four more
runs in the home third.
It started with Taylor
Hamm hustling for a leadofT
double. Joe Scott and Tyler
ing (they will also be print
ed in at least the Houston
Home Journal) three weekly
awards: Offensive, Defensive
and Special Teams Players
of the Week.
The plan he said would
be for the coaches to sub
mit nominations and have
the media vote on them.
(Currently the Douglas Daily
News, Moutlrie Observer,
Valdosta Daily and HHJ are
on board but the list could
be expanded through other
media wanting to partici
pate, Moore said.)
“My intent for the web
site and information is to
publicize the great players
and coaches of our region,”
Moore said.

(41-24) scored again with
two outs in the third inning
on Brown’s wild pitch.
But Trent Kline and
James Darnell left runners
stranded on second and third
with groundouts to first and
third, respectively.
“That was huge,” Perno
said. “They had second and
third and looked like they
were going to stretch it. We
didn’t want to fall too far
behind.”
Georgia’s Josh Morris
started the fourth-inning
rally with a double into the
left-field gap. Felmy followed
with an RBI single, paving
the way for Jacobs. Georgia’s
senior catcher worked the
count full and ripped Cisco’s
letters-high fastball into
the Leyland Cypress trees
beyond the wall.
Georgia scored three more
runs in the eighth inning on
Peisel’s run-scoring double
and Jonathan Wyatt’s RBI
single.
With the win, Georgia
improved to 10-0 in postsea
son elimination games played
at Foley Field. Overall, the
Bulldogs are 18-6 in playoff
elimination games. “They’ve
got a pretty good run going,
so hopefully they’re due to
stumble,” Tanner said.

Belkin says he wants to
own Hawks, Thrashers
The Associated Press
ATLANTA - Steve Belkin
said he’s “very thrilled” at
the chance of owning both
the Atlanta Hawks and the
Atlanta Thrashers after a
Maryland court Friday gave
him the right to become
the only owner of the two
teams.
“I absolutely want to
own the teams, and this is
not about money for me,”
the Boston businessman
told The Atlanta Journal-
Constitution Saturday. “It’s
been my passion and dream
for over 20 years to own and
control an NBA franchise,
and it’s clearly still my dream
and passion today to own
the Hawks and Thrashers
and to build championship
caliber teams.”
The current ownership
group has vowed to fight the
ruling.
Belkin was forced out of
the ownership group follow
ing a bitter and public dis
pute over the Hawks’ deci
sion to trade Boris Diaw, two
first-round draft picks and a
$4.9 million trade exception
to the Phoenix Suns for Joe
Johnson.
Belkin said Saturday that
he didn’t object to getting
Johnson to play for the
Hawks, but thought it could
be done without trading
Diaw and others.
“I clearly always wanted to
spend the money, and today I

'I think I can build

- Boston businessman Steve
Belkin, on owning the Hawks and
Thrashers
still want Joe Johnson on the
Atlanta Hawks,” he said.
Montgomery County (Md.)
Circuit Court Judge Eric
Johnson ruled Friday the
teams’ seven other owners
did not abide by the terms
of an agreement to buy out
Belkin. The judge said the
group’s actions triggered
Belkin's right to buy them
out and Belkin said he wants
to own the teams.
“I think I can build cham

I think ... the skills I will
bring and the Atlanta com
munity will make a winning

If the ruling stands, Belkin
is entitled to buy out the

the NBA’s Hawks, NHL’s
Thrashers and operating
rights to Philips Arena.
