Dealing with common summer rashes
u TT Xhat can I put
\j\j on this rash?”
T T is one of the
most common questions
asked of pharmacists this
time of year. With everyone
enjoying outdoor activities;
the annoying itchy skin
rashes (from insect bites,
sun and/ or soil exposure
and everything in between)
are an inevitable side
effect.
So, how do pharmacists
answer that question?
Well, it depends on the rash
and what it was caused
by. Not all skin rashes are
caused by allergic reactions.
Light or fair skinned indi
viduals may develop rash
from sun exposure. Small,
reddish blisters may appear
in as little as a few hours
after sun exposure and may
be extremely itchy.
Use of high sun protec
tion factor (SPF) sunscreen
can help prevent this rash.
Oral antihistamines (1.e.,
Benadryl) may help with
the itching unless the rash
is widespread and the itch
ing is severe (and it can be,
I’m fair skinned and this
happened to me, and it’s
miserable). In this instance,
it’s best to seek treatment
from your physician. Cool
water compresses with a
washcloth may also help
the itching.
Keep in mind that cool

Loitering for drug related purposes
ByRAYUGHTNER
HHJ Staff Writer
No, you can’t sleep it off in
your car.
Johnnie Wiggins Jr., 59,
of Ellaville, was cited for
loitering for drug related
purposes, suspended registra
tion and unregistered vehicle,
after reportedly being found
by police at 7:20 am. on
Wednesday, parked in a car
wash on N. Davis Drive.
He reportedly told police
he’d smoked crack the night
before with a girlfriend before
dropping her off near King
Drive.He reportedly appeared
disoriented, reaching for dif
ferent items in the car, but
consented to a search.
The search reportedly
turned up a wad of Chore Boy
copper scrubbing pad, a small
glass pipe with rubber mouth
piece burned with residue, a
small rubber mouth piece with
a broken glass pipe inside and
a long thin rod appearing to
have been used to pack the
pipes.
Also reportedly found in
the ashtray was a razor with
unknown residue, an empty
pill bottle and prescriptions for
Hydrocodone.
Shot to the top
On Thursday, about 2:31
am., Jeffery Tyler Whipple,
24,17188 Kings Chapel
Road, Perry, called police to
say someone was shooting at
him in the area of Inverness
Avenue. He said he was at
party in Perry and left to bring
two friends to an unknown
location on Wendan Way.
He said he was flagged
down on Ivemess and three
black males offered to sell him
maryuana He said he was
not interested and they said
you should have not brought
a white boy to this neighbor
hood, pulled out guns and shot
at him.
He drove around the block
and they were at another
Ivemess address and shot at
him again.
No bullet casings were
reportedly located at either
location and no holes were
observed in his car. And no
shots fired calls had been
reported in the area
When asked if he’d used any
illegal drugs, Whipple report
edly said, “I’ll be honest with
you, I hit a line of coke before
I left Perry.”
He consented to a search of
the car and police reportedly
found a spoon with a bum
mark on the bottom and white
residue in the bowl The resi
due tested positive for cocaine.
In the glove box police report

or cold compresses may
help with many itchy rash
es. And, for minor insect
bites, an ice cube wrapped
in a washcloth and gently
rubbed around the bite is
often an effective treat
ment. It minimizes swelling
and helps reduce itching
much better than some of
the old folk remedies.
Another common sum
mer rash is contact der
matitis. This is an allergic
reaction to something the
skin came in contact with.
Poison ivy is the most com
mon form of contact der
matitis; however, related
plants, metals, jewelry, per
fumes, cosmetics, dyes, and
rubber products can also be
the cause.
The rash caused by
poison ivy, poison oak
and poison sumac is due
to the presence of an oily
substance called Urushiol.
Urushiol is easily spread
with approximately 17 white
pills with no markings.
Whipple was charged with
loitering for drug related
purposes, with more charges
possible depending on the test
results of the pills.
Baby mama frama
On Wednesday, a man
reported to police that his
estranged “baby mamma” has
been following him around
town and cussing at him
because she is crazy. He asked
that action be taken before she
causes him to lose his job.
DSsorderty conduct
Throwing a woman and her
stuff out of the car, tearing off
a man’s shirt and kicking him,
slapping a woman in the face,
all done in front of witnesses
on the grassy area a4jacent
to Goodwill got both parties
arrest for disorderly conduct
(fighting) on Wednesday.

and stays active quite a
while; even a dead plant
can even cause allergic
reactions.
Urushiol can adhere to
anything and only a small
amount is required to cause
a reaction. It can easily be
transferred to your skin
by touching your clothing,
yard tools, or even your
pet. A reaction can even
occur if you come in con
tact with the smoke of the
burning plants.
The best way to treat
suspected exposure to any
one of these is to wash the
area with cool, soapy water
to minimize spread. Oral
antihistamines and topi
cal hydrocortisone cream
may also help. This treat
ment will help with most
all forms of mild contact
dermatitis; however, a phy
sician should treat severe
cases.

really that effective in
treating these rashes and,
in my opinion, neither is
Benadryl cream. Topically,
hydrocortisone products are
better. Benadryl is much
more effective orally (how
ever it does cause drowsi
ness).
However, hydrocortisone
creams should not used on
certain types of itchy rash
es (1.e., Chicken Pox, fungal
infections) and should not
be used for long periods of
time, especially in children.
Another type of skin
rash frequently seen in the
summer is due to fungal
infection of the skin caused
by organisms called der
matophytes, which live in
warm, moist areas.
These rashes are called
tinea infections and are
named for the area of the
body in which they occur.
For example, tinea pedis
(feet) would be a fungal
infection of the skin of the
feet.
This is more commonly
know as athlete’s foot and
is treatable by any number
of the over-the-counter
anti-fungal creams. Lamisil,
Tinactin, and Micatin are
some of the more common
name brands, however, I
encourage use of the lesser
expensive, but just as effec
tive, generic products.

Terrace Apartments with an
open container of Miller beer.
A search of her incident

a device used to smoke
crack cocaine.

infections with these prod
ucts, it is important to
wash your hands thorough
ly before and after appli
cation of medication (to
prevent spread) and to use
these products for several

symptoms disappear. If you
