Miami wins NBA championship
DALLAS (AP) - Dwyane Wade dazzled
Dallas one last time - and with a sizzling
four-game comeback, the Miami Heat
are NBA champions for the first time.
Just as Shaquille O'Neal and coach Pat
Riley predicted nine years apart, there
will be a parade in South Florida.
Wade will lead it. The man they call
“Flash” had 36 points and 10 rebounds in
the teeth of a hostile Dallas crowd, cap
ping his magnificent playoffs by leading
Miami past the Mavericks 95-92 as the
Heat roared back from a two-game defi
cit to win the NBA finals in six games.
Wade, the obvious finals MVP,
cemented his superstardom with a domi
nant four-game performance capped by
four pressure-packed, final-minute free

The Demonettes’ sum

appearances in the annual
camp at Northside High
School.
Warner Robins’ girls
went 6-0 here in a field that
included Mary Persons,
Bleckley County, Coffee
County, Putnam County and
Beach of Savannah.
Mobley reported working
with 25 players, 19 of which
made the trip to the Team
Camp USA. He said the girls
practiced for about three
weeks together, and this
week he had the gym open
physical workouts or speak to reporters,
the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported on
its Web site. Team coaches who saw
Roethlisberger said the swelling and
bruising that was apparent on the quar
terback’s neck and face last week had
subsided, the newspaper reported.
Aft-Star winner gets perks
(AP) - Winning the All-Star game will
still be worth something in October.
Home-field advantage in the World
Series this year will again go to the
league that wins the July matchup, own
ers and players agreed.
The American League has taken the
All-Star game all three times, and the
Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox
have swept the World Series the last two
years after starting at home.

“We had some players

they’ll be able to make big

about the progress made in
the off-season. The coach

the 2005-2006 team. He said

Georgia Tech couldn’t
close a game at Omaha. This
wasn’t meant to be their
series.
The Yellow Jackets allowed
eight runs in the eighth
inning to give Clemson a
victory. The Tigers swung
their bats.
I blame the coaches. I
think they encourage hit
ters to take pitches. The
philosophy must be to get
the hurler tired, to see his
repertoire, or make him go
deep in the count.
That’s the job of a leadoff
man in the opening inning.
That’s the job of the first
hitter to see a reliever, but
it’s poor planning.
Those bats cost between
S2OO and SSOO, but hitters
don’t get their money’s
worth if they don’t swing.

ing unless the pitcher has
shown he can’t throw strikes.
I don’t believe in taking a
pitch on three balls and no
strikes counts.
Instead, swing at anything
that is in your preferred
zone, otherwise let the ball
go. After that, start hack
ing.
Putting the ball in play is
always better than a K. In
college ball, any time a field

things happen* Don’t believe

the infield hit that scored

Fullerton.
One last note on the
Georgia Tech collapse: Why
didn’t Georgia Tech coach
Danny Hall replace reliever
Matt Wieters before the see
ing-eye single?
A new pitcher with a
change of velocity would
have required the hitters
to make adjustments. The
Yellow Jackets only needed
one out.
Meanwhile, college hitters

take the refunds and spend
the money on something else
equally foolish.

Of course this is also a

Basketball practice for 18

of other rising freshman,
