BRAVES
From page 1B
Braves pitchers already
have spent more than 700
days on the disabled list,
including Boyer and Devine,
who were disabled while at
Triple-A Richmond. Even
excluding Boyer and Devine,
Braves pitchers are approach
ing 600 days on the disabled
list, already much more than
in any of the last 15 seasons.
Atlanta manager Bobby
Cox made one adjustment
this week, moving starter
Jorge Sosa to the bullpen for
late-inning work.
Sosa said he has been told
he will have a chance to close
games. Sosa was 1-9 with
a 5.40 ERA as a starter, a
dramatic drop from his 2005
numbers - 13-3 with a 2.55
ERA.
There also have been drop
offs from some key hitters.
Giles, Francoeur, Langerhans
and Laßoche have had their
batting averages under .250

most of the season. Jones has
only seven homers.
Scott Thorman, a promis
ing power hitter, was called
up from Richmond this week
but had only two hits in his
first four games as a starter
in left field and at first base.
A growing concern in the
clubhouse is what direction
management will take if the
team doesn’t start winning.
Could the Braves become
sellers instead of buyers on
the trade market, and if so,
would any veteran be off lim
its?
Already, pitcher John
Smoltz caused a stir this
week when he said he would
be open to a trade that would
help the team, though he
emphasized he wants to fin
ish his career in Atlanta.
Smoltz said the question of
the Braves possibly becoming
sellers on the trade market
is the reason he was first
asked if he would be open to
a deal.
“That was one of the ques
tions,” Smoltz said. “I don’t
know. I’m not going to sit

here and figure it. Nobody in
there’s giving up. But I think
a lot of people are going to
start drawing conclusions
that it’s over and start figur
ing out what direction this
club’s going to move in.”
For now, the talk from
Schuerholz has been about
winning in 2006.
It’s not as if the Braves
have been consistently pum
meled by opponents. No
major league team has played
more one-run games than the
Braves’ 28, but they have lost
18 of those.
“We’re not getting blown
out, we’re playing just bad
enough to lose the ballgame,”
Hudson said after Wednesday
night’s 6-3 loss to Toronto.
“You look back and it’s one
or two different things that
seem to turn the game for
us.”
Said Giles: “We need to
step up our play a little, just a
little bit. We have more than
half of the season to turn this
thing around. There’s way
too many games left to write
the season off.”
