Suspect arrested
in councilman's
mother shooting
ATLANTA (AP) - Police
have made an arrest in the
shooting of a city council
man’s mother, who was
injured by a bullet from an
upfetairs apartment.
The unidentified suspect
was arrested Thursday
afternoon in the apartment
above Gloria Willis, Atlanta
Police Deputy Chief Peter
Anderson said. Gloria Willis
is the mother of Councilman
H. Lamar Willis.
Gloria Willis, a retired
teacher, was watching tele
vision in her southwest
Atlanta apartment last
Saturday when two bullets
came through her ceiling.
One bullet hit her shoul
der while the other went
through the right side of the
chair she was sitting in.
Investigators called the
shooting a random act of
violence.

Rivers wins third
preliminary
COLUMBUS (AP) - Lauren
Ledbetter, Miss Southern
Rivers, won the talent com
peition Thursday night for
a sweep of all three prelimi
nary categories in the 62nd
Miss Georgia Pageant.
Ledbetter, a 23-year-old
University of Georgia stu
dent competing in the pag
eant for the first time, sang
“I Am Woman.” She was a
winner in both lifestyle and
fitness/swimsuit and in eve
ning wear Wednesday under
a new format that has both
novice contestant prelimi
nary winners and returning
pageant veterans.
The returning contestant
winner in talent Thursday
was Miss South Georgia,
Marsha Moore, who tap
danced to Stevie Wonder’s
“Superstition.”

Erina Patterson, was a dou

Three iujured in
Georgia-Pacific
plant fire
CEDAR SPRINGS (AP) -
Three workers were injured
Thursday in a fire at a
power plant the provides
electricity to a Georgia-
Pacific linerboard plant on
the Chattahoochee River,
officials said.
Details of the fire about
8:30 a.m. were sketchy, but
a plant spokeswoman said
it was known as a “puff
back fire,” or flash fire, in
the bark delivery system
that provides material to be
burned in the power plant.
The three workers were
taken to the Southeast
Alabama Medical Center in
Dothan, Ala., spokeswoman
Celia Bostwick said. She said
that because of privacy rules,
she could not provide identi
ties of the workers or the
hunt"

Earthlink opens
store in Seattle
ATLANTA (AP) - Internet
services provider Earthlink
Inc. has launched a tour
aimed at giving consumers a
chance to test the company’s
voice products for free.
The first leg of the tour,
in Seattle, will allow hesi
tant consumers to try out
the Atlanta-based compa
ny’s phone service and “see
that it sounds like a nor
mal phone call,” said Steve
Howe, the company’s vice
president of voice services.
“Voice over Internet is so
new and confusing,” he said.
“But we’re at the cusp of
getting it mainstream.”
The company has already
launched its home phone
service in San Jose, Dallas,
San Francisco and Seattle,
said Terry Griffin, the com
pany’s vice president of mar
keting.
Soon the service will be
offered in Atlanta, Chicago,
Los Angeles, Miami, New
York, Philadelphia,. San
Diego and Washington, D.C.
By the end of next year, the
company said it could reach
a potential of roughly 20
million households.

OBITUARIES
HENRY G. ANDEL
PERRY - Henry G. Andel, 84, died at an Atlanta Hospital
on Thursday, June 22. Funeral Services will be held at 11
a m. today at Watson-Hunt Funeral Home with interment at
Woodlawn Cemetery. The family suggests contributions to
the Perry First Baptist Church. Andel, a native of Wauchula,
Fla., and the son of Ludwig and Elizabeth Weber Andel,
had resided in Perry since 1935. He recently retired as a
member of the Board of Tax Assessors for Houston County
where he worked for 35 years. AWW 11 Army Veteran, he
was a member of the VFW, the American Legion, and was
a Mason. He is survived by his wife, Wvlene W. Andel of
Perry; son, George Andel of San Jose, Calif.; daughter, Judy
Marsh of Miami, Fla.; sister, Elsie Merritt of Dunellen, Fla.;

ROY PHILLIP “CHIP” GATLIN. JR.
WARNER ROBINS - Roy “Chip” Gatlin, Jr., 45, passed
away on Wednesday, June 21. Services will be held at 11
a.m. today at Southside Congregational Holiness Church
1069 Wilson Street Macon. Gatlin was born June 10, 1961
in Macon. He was a veteran of the United States Army and
the United States Navy. He was preceded in Jeatfi by his
mother, Patricia Gatlin.
Power surge downs
Atlanta's 911 system
ATLANTA (AP)
Emergency dispatchers took
messages by hand after a sus
pected power surge knocked
out the computer-aided dis
patch system for the city’s
911 center.
The system’s back up bat
tery system also failed after
an electrical problem around
10:30 p.m. Thursday, said
Maj. Stan Savage of Atlanta
911.
That left dispatchers hav
ing to ask for and write
down caller information
that is usually provided by
computers. Savage said. The
computers usually give the
address of where the call is
