Houston Wellness Center launches program to fight youth obesity
Special to the HHJ
The Houston Wellness
Center and Houston
Healthcare are launching
We Can! (Ways to Enhance
Children’s Activity and
Nutrition), a new education
program designed to help
children 8-13 years old stay
at a healthy weight through
improving food choices,
increasing physical activ
ity, and reducing television,
computer or video game
screen time.
We Can! also reaches par
ents and caregivers in the
home and through the com
munity with educational
materials and activities,
including a new six-week
course for parents and chil
dren, a new parent Web site
wecan.nhlbi.nih.gov, aparent
handbook in both English
and Spanish, several youth
programs, and community
events and projects.
“Parents in Houston
County and our surround
ing area have new resources
available through the We
Can! program to help their
families maintain a healthy
weight,” says Alisha Fielder,
Coordinator for the Houston
Wellness Center and
Houston Healthcare’s Health

Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Center. “With the materials

Berry said. “This is the
most amazing collection of
songs I’ve ever recorded. I’m
just really thrilled with it,
really excited.”
“Writing is not an easy
thing for me to do,” con
fessed Berry.
“I enjoy it, but I’m not
very prolific at it - then
there’s people like Kerry. I’ve
got the gift to sing s song.
I’ve got the gift that when I
sing a song, you think that I
wrote it.' I sing it like I mean
it. There are some guys that
can do it all. Allen Jackson
- he writes everything and
is a great singer. That’s not
where my talents lie. A good
man knows his limitations.”
Although Berry will be
playing with the Band of
the U.S. Air Force Reserve
Friday, he has his own band
which consists of his wife
Robin; piano player, John
Hall; drummer, Chris Brown;
and guitarist, Andy Most.
Although Berry’s family -
his wife and three children
Taylor Marie, 16; Sean,
12; and Caelan, 11, used to
accompany him on the road
frequently, he said that only
“every now and then the
boys go on the road.”
“Sean is learning to play
the guitar, and Caelan is a
great drummer,” he empha
sized.
Berry, who started record
ing his own albums at home
in 1979, has played in every
state except Alaska and
does about 100 shows a year
around the country and in
Canada, where he has a
huge fan base.
“I started actually doing
Christmas shows the last

In addition to looking for
ward to performing with the
band, Berry has a private
pilot license and has owned
several small planes, so he
hopes to get the opportu
nity to visit the Museum of
Aviation at Robins Air Force
Base.
“I’d love to see the avia
tion museum,” he said. “I
have a private pilot license
to fly small planes and had
a couple of Cessna airplanes
over the years.”
Berry said the airplanes/
flying scared his wife to
death, so he finally sold his
last one. But as for flying,
he said, “I love it love it love
it.”
As for the concert, Berry

The Houston Wellness
Center is offering a We Can!
educational program for
families during the month of
July. Taught by an exercise
physiologist and a registered
dietitian, the We Can! pro
gram is a six-lesson course.
Each class lasts one hour on
Tuesday and Thursday eve

All classes will be held

said Berry, adding that he
doesn’t play in clubs much
anymore.
And being a born-again
Christian, Berry’s Christmas
shows hold a special place in
his heart.
“ I do love doing the
Christmas tour especially,”
he said, adding that this year
he will hit 27 cities begin
ning the Thursday before
Thanksgiving.
“When I first started play
ing in Athens, that wasn’t
what I did,” he said. “If you
were going to rock a club
in Athens, (I learned) you’d
better rock a club in Athens.
We had a lot of fun. We
tried to make it as much
of a party as we could. We
wanted to make people feel
like they had been at our
house at a party.”
But now, Berry said he
has much more important
things to achieve - especially
during the Christmas tour.
He wants people to leave
with something eternal in
their heart.
He wants people to see the
change that Christ has made
in him so that “people can
reach the potential God has
for each one of them.”
Berry said he became a
Christian when he was 10
years old and later had the
opportunity to rededicate
his life to Christ.
“It made a huge difference
in my personal peace and
life’s path,” he said.
This year, just in time
for Christmas, Berry will
release a box set from his
first six records from 1979
to 1990 which will be titled,
“John Berry’s Early Years.”
The box set will come with
a booklet that tells about
each album. A Georgia
native, Berry now resides in
Watkinsville with his family.

“I hope (everyone) has a
great time and an opportu
nity to eryoy the fact we live
in such a great country and
celebrate the fact that we
have a great Air Force band
that serves our country,” he
said.
The stadium will open to
the public at 6 p.m. with
festivities beginning at
7:15 p.m. with the Houston
County Honor Band, com
prised of select musicians
from the county’s four high
schools.
The main stage show, which
will begin at 8 p.m., will
be hosted by Mary Therese,
executive director of the
21st Century Partnership,
and Ben Jones WMAZ-TV
meteorologist, according to a
Robins Air Force Base press
release. At the conclusion of
the event, fireworks will be
set to music.
