4C ♦ SATURDAY, JULY 1, 2006 It's a bird, it's a plane. No, it's Superman! With all the comic book heroes success fully making it to the silver screen these days, such as the X-men and many others, I suppose Hollywood decided it was time to do a remake of Superman. I thought it would be inter esting to look back at one of the first “superheroes" that really revved up the comic book industry and made the jump from comics, to televi sion and then to the movie theaters. Two teenage friends from Cleveland Ohio who were active at their high school newspaper dreamed up breaking into newspaper comics or pulp magazines. Jerry Siegel was the writer and his friend Joe Shuster was the aspiring artist. Their first Superman creation was actually a bald headed vil lain. This Superman story just wasn’t very interest ing so they kept revamp ing it until they came up with the Superman that we know of today. They were very interested in a “righter of wrongs”, and a helper who provided justice for the downtrodden. Maybe grow ing up in the depression had something to do with this. It was actually an acci dent when Superman made it to the comics. Kiera Elise Phillips Christopher and Kelly Mann Phillips of Warner Jillinda Falen Antiques carilynns@alltel.net Shuster had carried their creation all over town but couldn’t find any takers. Publisher M.C. Gaines (later publisher of E.C. Comics) saw some promise in the boys creation and agreed to recommend the strip to D.C. Comics Publisher Harry Donenfeld when he called looking for new ideas. Donenfeld wasn’t impressed but liked the fact that the boys’ work was different, quite colorful and full of action. The two teens were quite excited and reformatted their newspaper strips into comic book form. In June of 1938, Action Comics #1 was released and Superman fever swept the country. Shortly thereafter, Siegel and Shuster’s dream of a newspaper comic also came to fruition. It is during this time that the character Jimmy Olsen and Kryptonite became part of the Superman vernacular. In 1941, he appeared in 17 cartoons for the Fleischer Studios. Superman tried his hand on the silver screen in 1948 and again in 1950. The 1950’s were kind of a strange time for the Superman series due to a few too many “super powers” and villains. The creators kind of got carried away with the whole “super” thing and introduced characters as “Streaky” the cat, Super Canady of Warner Robins; Gloria and Charlie Johnson of Perry; Bessie Head of Warner Robins and Kirk Durden of Warner Robins. As most of you know, Mr. Reeves passed away after becoming a quad riplegic due to a horseback riding accident. In doing the research for this article, I found an article about a Superman cape used by George Reeves selling for $200,000!
