But he said that’s what makes the games so close and exciting to watch. Very rarely does one team dominate another, and the coach said that affects things on a national level because other BCS confer ences can have one team run roughshod over all the others and thus earn an “unstoppable” reputation. “I’d be surprised if one team dominates our league (over a period of time),” said Richt. “So many of them are doing a great job of coach ing and recruiting and pre paring. “I think we have great players. We have a great stadium and fan base. We have an administration that wants to win. We have great coaches. But when you look at another team in our league, it’s like looking in a mirror. “You’re looking at the same things. What’s going to separate us? “There’s a massive amount of close games that are going to be won with special teams and proper tackling. “It’s not a magical thing. It’s hard work, teamwork, don’t turn the stinking ball over and try to make some big plays against outstand ing opponents.” It had to be brought to Richt’s attention that Georgia’s championship suc cess in his tenure was done with a 3-7 combined record against the school’s tough est rivalries in the SEC: Florida (1-4) and Auburn (2-3). “You don’t have to win every game to make it to the league championship,” he responded. “We haven’t done it in a dominating fashion. “We just won the games SERSEY From oaae 1B I must tell you that although ASU has ramps leading to every building, I haven’t seen many handi capped individuals on the campus. Based on my travels, I’d say that the university doesn’t host too many wheelchair basketball games. I’m surprised the school found enough flat ground to build a level football field. In case you are unaware, ASU won the Division I-AA football championship last season. You learn a lot about a city when you walk through it. First thing I learned was how long it would take me to walk from my dorm to the cafeteria —five minutes uphill, three down. Dear reader, you must realize that I’m not trying to lose actual pounds through denial, that famous river in Egypt, but via exercise and a chaste life. When you look like me the chaste part is easy. Plus, my Muffin told me while she was cleaning her shotgun 929-0624 2508 Moody Road 'You don't have to win every game to make it to the league championship.' - Georgia head coach Mark Richt we needed to win and were fortunate to win two out of three when we got to the championship.” Last season was certainly one to test the mettle of a Bulldog fanatic. The Bulldogs had three games left to clinch the Eastern Division, but dropped the first two against Florida and Auburn. Georgia finally won the third one against Kentucky. In retrospect, the most important win of the season may have been the first SEC game, which was a nail-biter against South Carolina. “It proved to be true for both of our programs,” said Richt. “That game is a huge game for the momentum.” Yes, Georgia has a four game winning streak against South Carolina, with each win leading to a 10-win sea son. Before that, the Gamecocks had Georgia’s number for a while and were able to par lay those wins into a major bowl bid. Ideally, a Georgia fan would love to have it all, wins over the major rivals and the SEC title. It hasn’t worked out that way under Richt. So what does he think is most important to the Bulldog Nation? “I hope it’s winning the championship,” he said. “There are certain games they’d like to win more than others, but I would never trade any single game victory for the opportunity to be the champion of our league. Looking towards the 2006 that she had no sense of humor about certain things. She rather pointedly explained I’d have to sleep sometime. The exercise part is the most challenging. I have to stretch before I go on my jaunts. That uphill stuff is tough on the calves and thighs. My notion of stretching is a big yawn and strong back wards lean when I get up in the morning. Intentionally bending, twisting, and turn ing tires me, and I haven’t even left my room. •■-■■.Mr*’ m , |I. , -i” r" Zi. 1» Jr? t&Xmgt iML, H .. In 2001 red shirt David Greene emerged as the starter and held that job for the next four years. Senior D.J. Shockley finally got his turn last year after showing spots of greatness backing up Greene. “This is probably the most up-in-the-air we’ve been rolling into a season,” said Richt. “They definitely need to be good decision-makers. They need to be able to hit their target. They need to be able to handle the pres sure of the job. “I’d feel more comfortable if we were rolling in there with a three-year starter. But most times guys have been prepared properly and have the right stuff. When their day comes, they do well. It may be a little rocky in the beginning. I expect somebody to come up and play well.” For the record, Joe Tereshinski 111 is the front runner as a redshirt senior with one career start. After him are sophomore Blake Barnes, redshirt freshman Joe Cox and true freshman Matthew Stafford. “We have very good run ners and I think we’ll block well,” said Richt about the supporting cast on offense. “We have veteran linemen and a veteran tight end. Our fullbacks have had oppor tunities to start. I think we can run the ball well, but to think we could do that exclusively would not be wise.” Mohamed Massaquoi not only emerged as a star receiver for Georgia as a freshman in 2005, he, according to Richt, showed the rest of the wideouts how much they need to step things up. He said the receivers had a good spring practice and are continuing to impress in off-season workouts. Also, I have to have a place to go. The notion of walking for the sake of walking appalls me, so I take the long way to the cafeteria, I walk to the grocery store, I saunter to the ice cream parlor, and I stroll to the candy empo rium. At this rate, I’ll have to get fired from this column to lose another 10 pounds. Think what that will do to my appearance. I’ll look like a walking skeleton—the male Calista Flockhart. 3B
