DON'T RUN AWAY/
1/T07. 61
See something, say
something, do something
In the past few weeks there have
already been cases of children and pets
being left in cars while their caretakers
were otherwise engaged.
An incident that occurred in Roswell
involved two dogs being locked in a car
during the day, while their owner was in
the air-conditioned comfort of a movie
theater. Someone in the parking lot noticed
the dogs and called Roswell Police.
The temperature inside the vehicle was
recorded at 167 degrees, according to
police reports.
The owner of the dogs was charged
with two counts of cruelty to animals and if
found guilty can be fined up to $1,000 and
serve up to six months in jail.
A similar incident occurred in Smyrna
when a 22-year-old mother left her
16-month-old daughter inside her car while
she worked in a mall store. Police said the
windows were rolled up and they believe
the child had been locked inside the car,
strapped in her car seat for more than two
hours when she was discovered by mall
security. This mother was arrested and
charged with first-degree child cruelty; the
child was placed in protective custody.
As difficult as it is to imagine anyone
leaving any living being inside a hot car
on a summer day, it happens all too
frequently.
With several months of intense heat
still ahead of us, we ask that readers
be cautious to not do the same and to
report any similar incidents to the proper
authorities.
Alerting the authorities may save the life
of an innocent child or pet.
