DECATUR
Gourmet and organic market-cafe opens
BY KATHY MITCHELL

Savi Provisions, which
describes itself as, “a
neighborhood destination
that sells locally sourced
gourmet and organic foods,
fine wines and spirits,” opened
its newest shop recently in
downtown Decatur. The new
business joins other Atlanta
area locations in Brookhaven,
Buckhead, Inman Park and
Midtown. Savi Provisions
launched in Inman Park in
2009.
A combination cafe, deli,
bakery, specialty grocery
and wine and beer shop, the
Decatur Savi Provisions,
occupies the 4,200-square-foot
space on West Ponce de Leon
that for many years was home
to Cook’s Warehouse.
Molly Finzer, general
manager of the Decatur Savi
Provisions, said Decatur is an
ideal location for a business
that celebrates —in the words
of its online description—
“a resurgence of the local
farmer, the farmer’s market,
farm-to-table, underground
supper clubs and a renewed
commitment to understanding
what we eat and where it
originates.”
“Decatur is such an
eclectic and locally driven
neighborhood. The sense
of community is absolutely
invigorating. The support
from the local community is
wonderful,” Finzer said. “Every
day I still meet someone who
walks in having not realized
we are here and witness their
excitement. We have truly
lovely regulars and hope
to continue growing the
relationship with all of our
neighbors.”
Despite being associated
with Atlanta, one of America’s
major cities, Decatur has its
own character, Finzer said.
“Decatur is one of those
neighborhoods where you do
not realize how close you are
to the big city as it feels like a
small town where everyone
knows each other. From the
days of construction with the
neighbors peering in the glass

windows to today where I
personally know a lot of the
locals by name, people here
have been beyond supportive.”
Finzer, who has been a
restaurant general manager
at other Decatur and Atlanta
eateries, describes her decision
to accept the position at
Savi Provisions as a “career
jump with a different focus.”
“I couldn’t ask to work
for someone more enjoyable
than [Savi Provisions founder
and CEO] Paul Nair. He truly
cultivates personal growth
and empowerment in his
team and creates a great work
environment. The guests that
come into the store every day
and remember all of my team
by name truly embody the idea
of a neighborhood market that
we like to create,” she said.
Finzer said she loves
that the store reminds her
of the small neighborhood
markets of generations passed.
“My great-grandparents had
a small Italian market in
Pennsylvania and whenever
my father is in this store he
tells me it reminds him so
much of his grandparents’
store,” she said.
The company website says
that atmosphere is precisely
what the founder was trying
to create. It states, “With Savi
Provisions, we revisit the role
of the original purveyors who
built generational relationships
with farmers, vineyards and
distilleries to serve their local
communities. They put out
a shingle, sourced the best
organic fruits and vegetables,
purchased the finest wine and
spirits and invited neighbors to
join them around the table to
celebrate that bounty.”
Customers can drop by
for a salad or sandwich or to
pick up a specialty cheese or a
bottle of wine. Savi Provisions
also offers catering and invites
customers to participate in
special events such as wine
and beer tastings. Residents
may also join a wine club or
connoisseurs club entitling
them to a newsletter, tastings,
special selections, priorities
on specialty wines and other
perks.
While the trend toward
locally produced foods often
is associated with young
urbanites, Finzer said the
Decatur Savi Provisions
attracts customers across a
wide range of demographics.
“In Decatur, we see everyone.
From high school kids, young
families, business professionals
and our local seniors, you
will see every demographic
represented on a daily basis,”
she commented.
