Dog Days of Summer benefit
announced
On Aug. 18 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.,The
Wieloch Group will host a fundraiser to benefit
Canine Caravan at Brookhaven Park, 4158
Peachtree Rd. NE, Brookhaven.
The Wieloch Group will accept monetary
and supply donations for Canine Caravan
Rescue. According to information provided, all
proceeds and donated items will be given to the
nonprofit. Nerd Dawgs will provide food and
drinks and King of Pops will provide ice cream
for both people and dogs.
There will be games, giveaways and raffle
prizes at the event. Dogs are welcome to come
to the event! Canine Caravan Rescue will bring
dogs in need of foster homes to the event.
Canine Caravan Rescue has a mission of saving
the lives of up to 50 animals each month in the
greater metro area. The nonprofit raises funds
to vet and transport the animals from local high-
kill animal control facilities to rescue partners in
the northeastern states. One hundred percent of
all donations go to the vetting and transport of
these animals giving them a chance to live and
find loving homes, according to a release.
CLARKSTON
Active shooter awareness class
scheduled
Clarkston Police will hold a free active
shooter awareness class Aug. 15 from 6:30 to
8:30 p.m. at the Clarkston Library. The police
department is providing this class to increase
public awareness of the rise in active shooter
incidents in the United States, to assist in public
preparedness for an active shooter event and
to inform and educate about law enforcement's
active shootings processes and procedures. The
library is located at 951 North Indian Creek Drive.

Thrift Shop Day to be celebrated
Goodwill will celebrate National Thrift Shop
Day Aug. 17-19 with several planned shopping
events. Shoppers are invited to Goodwill's
Decatur store (2201 Lawrenceville Highway
in Decatur) Aug. 17 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. for
a thrift-inspired fashion show. Local fashion
stylists and influences will also be offering free
styling sessions. Shoppers are invited to visit any
Goodwill of North Georgia location for flash sales

Flat Rock Archives reception
announced
DeKalb History Center and Flat Rock Archives
will host a reception Aug. 24 from 7 - 8:30 p.m. to
announce the opening of an exhibit dedicated
to the historic Flat Rock Community—one of the
oldest African-American communities in DeKalb
County. The Flat Rock exhibit will replace "Tears
and Curses: a Human Look at the Civil War"and
will officially launch in February 2019.
The reception will include wine, light
refreshments, a live oral history with Patsy
Moon, and other guest speakers. A video
detailing the history of the Flat Rock community
will be featured in the "Reclaimed by Nature"
Arabia Mountain exhibit. Guests will experience
a photo gallery preview of have the coming
exhibit and the opportunity to view DeKalb
History Center's current exhibits.
The free reception will be held in the lobby of
the historic DeKalb Courthouse, home of DeKalb
History Center, 101 E. Court Square in downtown
Decatur.
Flat Rock Archives was co-founded in 2006 by
Johnny Waits, the late Rev. T.A. Bryant, Jr., and
Vera Whitaker and is the only African American
archival facility in DeKalb County. Flat Rock
Archives is located on the Bryant homestead,
which was built in 1917 and includes a barn,
smokehouse and out house.

Library book sale announced
Stonecrest Library will hold a book sale
on Aug. 11,10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The library is
located at 3123 Klondike Road, Stonecrest.
Books are in all categories, such as fiction/
non-fiction, crafts books, text books, romance
series, magazines, encyclopedias, books on tape/
CD, DVDs and VHS.

Home flea market details
announced
United Methodist Children's Home (UMCH)
will host a flea market Aug. 18 from 9 a.m. to 4
p.m. Proceeds of the sale of donated items will
help UMCH reach more children and families
in crisis in new communities across north
Georgia. The flea market includes an array of
items on sale, including furniture, electronics,
clothing, art, collectibles, jewelry, toys, books,
glassware, flatware, appliances, decorative items,
sporting goods, and many other objects and
conversation pieces. UMCH is located at 1967
