AcyiA CIRCULATION | VERIFICATION | COUNCIL Boxing Day a unique way to express gratitude Boxing Day originated in the United Kingdom and is celebrated the day after Christmas in many countries throughout the world. According to Wikipedia, the Dec. 26 holiday is celebrated as a second Christmas Day. It is often a time when vendors, personal assistants, couriers, postal carriers and domestic workers expect to receive a box containing gifts, cash or food. The origin of Boxing Day is often attributed to 16th and 17th century British traditions which allowed domestic servants of wealthy families to have the day after Christmas off to visit family and friends because they were expected to work on Christmas Day. Though no longer applicable to many, it would be a unique way for employers and the public to express gratitude to those who work in the hospitality industry, healthcare, or public service positions such as police and firefighters who are required to work on Christmas Day.
