File photo BY JAY PHILLIPS JAY@DEKALBCHAMP.COM DeKalb County Public Library (DCPL) branches will host events in December and January to celebrate the Doris K. Wells Heritage Festival and to highlight DeKalb's diversity and history. According to a news release, the festival cele brates the "diverse cul tural heritages of DeKalb County residents through special programs and events." Programs held throughout December and January are expected to feature music, stories, food, crafts, and informa tional workshops. Some of the events scheduled for the festival include: • Kwanzaa educational workshops at the Wesley Chapel William C. Brown Library (2861 Wesley Chapel Road in Decatur) that will include trivia and history throughout December. • A Kwanzaa celebration on Dec. 18 from 7 - 8 p.m. at the Flat Shoals branch (4022 Flat Shoals Parkway in Decatur), where author Jerry G. White will host an interactive celebration. • A Kwanzaa Kinara workshop on Dec. 21 from noon until 2 p.m. at the Wesley Chapel William C. SEE LIBRARIES ON PAGE 6 Brookhaven voters have elected the city's next mayor. H.J. "John" Park, who previously served as a Brookhaven city councilmember, gained approximately 58.6 percent of the 6,084 ballots cast in Brookhaven, beating Lauren Keifer who gained approximately 41.4 percent of votes cast during the Dec. 5 runoff election. Park also made history with his win by becoming Georgia's first Asian-American mayor, according to multiple sources. "It's you who won tonight, it's Brookhaven who won tonight," Park said to a crowd of supporters, including current Brookhaven Mayor John Ernst, who endorsed Park and introduced him as the city's next mayor after the results came in. "We're going to do great things together," continued Park. "I will be a mayor for all of Brookhaven, especially those who didn't vote for me.
