Fruit Killed by Cold: That the early
fruit and vegetable crops In the southern
sectioa of Florida have been practically
ruined by the cold wave is almost a foregone
conclusion, for with temperature far
below freezing, the trees and plants have

past few weeks caused fruit irsos *n
bloom and the early vegetable crops were
flourishing. The cold here is more severe
tuan since the freeze ten years ago,
and it is feared that it has extended into
tne orange belt of the south.
The Census Bill providing the method
and means of taking the federal census
in 1910 will, it is believed, be disapproved
by President Roosevelt, and it is even
more certain that an efTort will be made
in congress to pass the law over his veto.
President Roosevelt is very much opposed
to that section of the bill which authorizes
congressmen to name the supervisors
and clerks for their respective districts.

the supervisors, but his demands were
not heeded by congress when it was under
consideration. The congressmen themselves
are anxious to control the patronage,
and it is only natural that they
should resist any effort to invoke the civil
service regulation In Ailing the thousands

within the house of commons. A committee
was appointed to draw up new
rules for the admission of strangers. The

act making it a criminal offense for strangers
to brawl within the chamber, and
they aiso recommended that strangers
should be made responsible for their own
good behavior and should sign a paper accepting
that responsibility. That oeing
done, th committee saw no reason why
women. as well as men, should not be
admitted to the strangers' gallery.
