PROTEST FROM THE DRUGGISTS.
The protest which was made by the :
National Association of Retail Druggists, ;
which held its annual meeting in September,
against the sale of intoxicating liquors
in drug stores was praiseworthy ,
aiiKe iroiii tile standpoint of good sense
and of philanthropy. The drug store can
not perforin the function of both saloon ,
and pharmacy without serious detriment ,
to the latter. And the practice of retailing
liquor will mcreusingl> offend
the sensibilities of the best patrons of (
the drug store. With the passing of the
saloon there is a greater temptation to [
use the drug store as a substitute, a temptation
which the owners of the drug 1
stores ought to strenuously resist. The j
Retail Druggists' Association deserves the
support of all retail druggists as well as .
the general public when it says:
"We believe the time has come when
the Association should put itself on rec- j
ord as being opposed to the sale of In- j
toxicating beverages by druggists. We
do not believe, in the first place, that it
is the proper function of the druggist
to act as a bar-tender in slaking the thirst
for whisky of that part of the public I
that drinks it. In view of the constant
and increasing crusade iienlrst the coin
of whisky generally, we believe lhat we j
should declare against its sale by drug- J
gists. We, therefore, recommend that j
whi3ky or other'alcoliolic beverage-selling
by druggists cease. We believe that
by this means the profession will be re j
lieved of the necessity of guarding
against the abuses of whisky-selilng privileges
in force in many States, as well
as of having to bear the stigma of some
saloonists doing business under the guise j
or druggists."?Ex.
The House Judiciary Committee of the
West Virginia Legislature has reported
favorably a joint resolution submitting
to the people a constitutional amendment
providing for prrhib'tion. The tide of
temperance Is moving strongly in this '
State, and ii seems as If It will not be
long until West Virginia will take her
place in the column of those forbidding
the evil traffic.
DOES PROHIBITION PROHIBIT?
.Governor Hoch, of Kansas, In his
Thanksgiving address, made the following
statement:
"One-third of our counties are without
prisoners in their jails or paupers in
their poorhouse. One-half of our counties
contributed no convicts to our pris- j
on population last year. One half of our
prison inmates never lived in Kansas
long enough to gain a residence here.
Our educational institutions were never
So flourishing. Our churches were never
?u strung, nor me spirmiai outlook more
hopeful. The saloon has been practically
banished from our State, and Its
baneful influence almost entirely eliminated."
. It is needless to say that the above
was not put in circulation by the literary.
