COLUMBIA SEMINARY.
For the commencement in May Columbia
Seminary is well fixed. Dr. James
Orr, of Scotiand, is to preach the Baccalaureate
sermon, and Rev. A. M. Fraser,
D. D., of Staunton, Va., the annual missionary
sermon. These names are the
guarantee that Columbia has a great
treat in store.
The executive committee ot the Board
of Directors have secured the services
of Dr. W. E. Mcllwain
to travel in the interest of the
seminary, and raise the $100,000 voted
to the improvement of the seminary
by the four controlling Synods. No
better choice could have been made. Dr.
Mcllwain has the qualities which inspire
confidence and insure success.
The committee has also let the contract
for a very handsome fence, brick,
granite and iron, to inclose the seminary
campus. This will make it easily the
most beautiful square in the city of Columbia.

HAMPDEN-SIDNEY COLLEGE.
This has been a month of oratory at
Hampden-Sidney. On the nignt of February
5 representatives of the two
literary societies met to contest for the
trophy?a beautiful loving cup?offered
yearly by the Hon. Don P. Halsey, of
Lynchburg, as a prize to be striven for
by the societies. The question chosen
for discussion was, "Resolved, That the
United States should disarm her fleet
and cease to maintain a navy." The
affirmative was supported by the Union
Society through its representatives,
Messrs. L. H. Lancaster and F. C.
Brown; the negative was championed
by the Philanthropic Society, representee!
by Messrs. W. B. Blanton and J. E. Guthrie.
After an earnest and able discussion
the trophy was awarded to the
Philanthropic Society.
The afternoon of February 11, 12
and 13 were devoted to the delivery
of the public orations required of all
Juniors applying for degrees. The performance
was generally creditable, and
the audience gave unanimous expression
to the opinion that the exercises showed
marked improvement over those of recent
years, arousing the hope that more
attention than of late will be paid to this
important agency of college training.
