THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA.
I
The Completion of the Proposed MillionDollar
Endowment has been
Accomplished.
To this great work President Alderman

of its headship. Mr. Andrew Carnegie
| subscribed $500,000 conditionally, expressing
bis great pleasure ht bis ability
to serve the University of Virginia, and
through it the States of the South.
Other sums were added in spite of financial
depression in the country, until with
$100,000 raised in November and $150,000
procured during President Alderman's
recent visit to New York, the one million
mark has been reached, without including
one dollar of bequests or State ap
propriauons.
This large endowment, which exceeds
by a quarter of a million donars the accumulated
endowment fund of the University
from 1825 to the beginning of
this movement, will be held by the
alumni board of trustees of the University
of Virginia endowment fund.
The $500,090 given by Mr. Carnegie
will become the permanent endowment
of at least six schools in the University
?the school of engineering, the school
of political enconomy and political
science, two chairs in the school of law,
the school of English, and the school of
pathology. These will be named for
great men whc have helped build the uni
versuy ana tn nation.
The Univer8h of Mississippi is attended
largely by young' men who are
Christians, at least to the extent of helonging
to some church. The Advocate
is Indebted to Paul Renshaw for statistics
collected by the Y. M. C. A. of that institution.
The Methodists in the university
number 125; Baptists, 95; Presbyterians,
64; Cumberland Presbyterians, 8;
Episcopalians, 23; Catholics, 7; Disciples,
5; Jews, 3; Mormons, 2; Eddyites, 2.
This enumeration includes only fourteen
who do not yet belong to the Church
for which they profess a preference, and
It includes all the students of the school
except thirty. This may be a better
showing than most colleges and unlvprsi
ties can make, even In the south, but It
Is certain that among the people who
prize and strive for the best things and
who will be leaders in state and In society
the great majority profess Christianity;
and if tney fall *to make the
world Detter, It will be their own fault.?
