The Century Magazine for July has not
failed to respond to the general interest
this summer in the life and influence of
John Calvin, the Reformer of Geneva.
"The* Human Side of Calvin" is told by
Maria Honor Lansdale, an historical authoress
of repute, and "Calvin as a Reformer"
in a paper by Dr. Francis
Brown of Union Seminary, New York.
Dr. Elwood Worcester of Boston, writes
on "The Emmanuel Movement," in defence
and explanation of the theory and
practice of healing body and mind, of
which he is the author and promoter.
Some friend is kindly sending us cop
ies of The Southern Cross, a weekly Sunday
Magazine for the Home, Melbourne,
Australia. The May numbers are on
"The King's Business," and give interesting
tidings of the Chapman-Alexander
evangelistic meetings in Melbourne. Sermons
and addresses of Dr. Chapman are
given, and accounts of great assemblies
in a vast exposition building. Mr. Alexander,
with his expansive smile and
flying coat skirts is leading them in
"He will hold me fast," and "Don't stop
praying," as he did so finely in Richmond
and Boston.
The Beauty of God. As revealed in His
words, His written Word, and the living
Word through the ministry of life
and light and love. By John Hood,
A. M., M. D. K. M. 372 pp. fl.25. J
Lanahan, Baltimore.
This is a remarkable book. In its
lofty theme, "The Beauty of God," its
high purpose to unfold that beauty, its
wide range of thought and of illustrative
Quotation, and its sustained excellence
throughout, it is a rare book. It is not
transcendental in the sense that it is visionary
and speculative. It is, we believe,
thoroughly Scriptural and sound- in its
teachings. There are eighteen chapters
or papers, of eight or ten pages each to
which one can give sustained attention
without weariness. Beginning with the
beauty which God has given to the nat
ural world, the author at once ascends to
life and "Eternal Life," which brings the
Seauty of Holiness. And ''The Way to
Life" "Saved by His Life," leading on to
"Knowledge," "Eternal Knowledge and
To Attain It," "Light," "Love," "The Divine
Government among Men," "Prayer,"
"The Incarnation," "The Witnessing
Spirit." It is h'gh and impressive
study to find in these great subjects the
HE PRESBYTERIAN OF THE SOI
trace of the Beauty of God. The wh' !e
treatment is philosophical, scientific and
theological, yet the style is chaste and
clear, and the object and effect are distinctly
religious. This is not the hasty
work of a few weeks. It is probably the
fruit of many years of reflection and
careful and patient perparation.
From "Prologue to Epilogue" the
book is written in a devout and reverent
spirit, and with a sustained loftiness of
style and purpose that holds the reader

reading it all, one wants to make the devout
prayer: "Let the Beauty of the
Lord our God te upon us. and establish
thou the work of our hands upon us; yea
the work of our hands, establish thou
it."
The catalogue of Silliman Collegiate
Institute for Young Ladies, at Clinton,
La., comes to our desk this week. It is
dainty and beautiful, fitly representing
the refinement and culture that all who
know that institution associate with its
name. We know whereof we affirm
when we urge parents to consider the
merits of this Institute when they are
selecting a place for their daughters. In
buildings, equipment, faculty, course of
study, homelikeness and refinement they
will find it in the first rank. We recom
mend correspondence with Rev. H. H.
Brownlee, the President.

A very interesting, picturesque story

keen, a bright child of nature, and of a
prim old aunt, whom the child is determined
to see in love and successfully
wooed. . A pleasant evening's reading,
especially to all who like the Scotch dialect.
