COMMENCEMENT AT ARKANSAS
COLLEGE, BATESVILLE, ARKANSAS.

Aransas, observed its thirty-second annuPl
commencement June 13-15, 1909.
K6V. R. E. Vinsnn TV TV nf Austin Tho.
ological Seminary, Texas, preached the
bacc^'aureate sermon based upon Deut.
8:3, "Man doth not live by bread only,
but by every word that proceedeth out
of tfe mouth of the Lord doth man
live.''
Th? sermon before the Y. M. C. A.
was d?*,Jvered by Dr. Vinson. The minister
wC? bad been invited to preach before
the\Y- c- A- wa? detained at
the last moment. This sermon was also
greatly by a large audience.
The dajf greatest interest, especially
to the students, waa Monday when the
intersociMy oratorical contests were
held. A fanner is contended for annual
ly, representatives from the Philomathean
aiM Erosophic Societies being the
contestant8- This year the banner was
won by / the Erosophic representatives.
The cjilosiug exercises were held Tuesday.
Fi)ve young men and two young ladies
re?'eived their degrees. The writer
has attended nineteen consecutive commencements
at Arkansas College and
this last J-Quals any he has witnessed.
The E(f>ar<J ?' Trustees assented to a
change in \ the course leading to the Bachelor

>
The fln)>ancial condition of the college
is encou^'aKing. While the endowment is
small it,l 18 wisely invested and the income
is* economically expended. With
the seri<->U8 handicap of a very small endowment
- Arkansas College has done and
is doing a large work for Arkansas. H.
CENTfRAL UNIVERSITY OF KEN?
TUCKY.
Ti'he commencement exercises of the
Central University of Kentuokv on Tune
9 closed the 90th session of this ven*
erable institution. The most interesting
feature was an able address by President
Chas. Wm. Dabney, of the University of
Cincinnati, on "The Meaning of the
the solid South."
Diplomas with the degree of Bachelor
of Arts were conferred on twenty-one
young men; with the degree of Mhster

Bachelor of Law on ten. The degree of
Doctor of Divinity was conferred on
Rev. H. H. Sweets, of Louisville, Ky.,
and on Rev. Rutherford E. Douglas, of
Macon, 6a.
The president's report showed vitality
and progress in every department of the

the material equipment, the most important
of which is the splendid building
erected during the past year to house the
engineering departments.
