wipe between the tines of the forks, and
that know just how mach raising bread
ought to have, and how to hang out a
wash so each piece will get the best sun,
it's a real joy to get back to the ordinary
kind of man. Yes, 'tis so"! Mrs.
Gregg finished, with much emphasis. "I
want a man who should have sense
about the thing3 he's meant to have
sense about, but when: it comes to
keeping house, I like him real helpless,
the way the Lord planned tp have him"!
?Youth's Companion.
A farmer living in a wet and late district
in the East of Scotland found times
and seasons so against him that he decided
not to renew his lenso
his landlord the other day he said?
"I can mak' nothing o' sic wat and sour
land, and I'm no' goin' on wi't, or I'll be
ruined."
"Well, John, take time to think o't,"
said the landlord; "no doubt we'll be
able to come to terms. I might let you
have the farm at a reduction on the
acre."
"Ah, laird," replied the farmer, "your
land should be let by the gallon, no' by
.the acre"!
It is told in Washington that a lady
who is a member of a prominent church
employing a deaconess to assist the pastor,
had been ill and a friend visiting her
asked if the pastor had been to see her.
"No," she replied, "he was too busy to
come, so he sent his nurse."
"This bell," said a well-meaning sexton,
when showing the belfry of an interesting
village church to a party of
visitors, "is only rung in case of a visit
from tjie lord bishop of the diocese, a
lire, a flood, or any other such calamities."
Nervous Passenger (on Providence
steamer): "That's a vejry peculiar noise
in the water tonight. Do you notice it,
captain"? Captain: "Yes, madam: that's
the reg'lar Long Island Sound."
We advise any of our young readers
who may think of writing stories to beware
of the moon. Long ago this mild
neighbor and attendant of the earth was
suspected of exercising a sinister influence
upon men's minds. The Psalmist
thought "the moon by night" among
the things from which he needed protection.
There are many modern story
writers who need to pray his prayer, for
their moons play fantastic tricks. They
require the full moon to set or to rise
at midnight, for example, see the new
moon in the eastern sky, the waning
moon in the west, and such like things.
No really self-respecting moon ever was
guilty of these aberrations.?Christian
