No.able among the strong features of
the September Century are the first
chapters of "Fulton's Invention of the
Steamboat," written by his great-granddaughter,
Alice Crary Suteliffe. The
narrative, dealing in this issue with the .
trial-boat on the Seins, is told largely
in extracts taken from papers of the in
ventor never before published, and is
illustrated with plans by Fulton only recently
discovered, and with portraits.
The "Quarterly Register," the organ
of the Alliance of Reformed Churches
Holding the Presbyterian System, for
August, is at hand. It gives short accounts
of the meeting of the Alliance in
New York, in June, of several of the
commemorations of John Calvin, and of
six of the Church Courts of bodies connected
with the Alliance. We must admit
a feeling of disappointment every
time we read this "Register." Now and
then it has in it something that is instructive
and helpful, in the way of his
torical study, but as a rule its pages are
very dull and uninteresting, and its narration
of events in the Church Courts is
always too late to be of any special interest.
The New Schaff-Herzog Encyclopedia
of Religious Knowledge. Funk & Wag
nails. New York. Volume IV.
Draeseke-Goa.
This volume is a fitting companion in
every respect to those that have preceded
It. It contains 948 topics adequately
treated by 176 collaborators. It is not
the result of speculation but the setting
forth of ascertained facts. The authenticity
of the Holy Bible is not only admitted
but maintained and sustained by
recent explorations and discoveries. It
embraces many articles of snecinl value
ill Archaeology, biography and of historical
interest. The lives and work of Alexander
Duff, Jonathan Edwards, Sr. and
Jr., the Erskines, Erasmus, Fenelon, John
Pox, St. Francis Xavler and many others
are luminously treated, while such topics
as the Druids, Dunkers, Egypt, Church of
England, France, the effect of the
French Revolution on Religion, and such
like are set forth fully ar.d without
waste of words. Articles on Bible subjects
as Ecclesiastes, Elijah, Enoch, Eu
purm.es, uizemei, eic., ana otners along
ethical and scientific lines as Duty, Emanation,
Ethics, Evolution, etc., are both
interesting and instructive.
When this work is completed It will
prove an untold blessing to busy men? '
specially to hard worked pastors, whose
time is limited and whose access to
books is not extensive. R. M.
