JESUS THE GREAT MISSIONARY.
Nov. 26, 1922. Luke 8.
As last week, so this week we havt.
a whole chapter for our lesson. It.
is so full of great facts and wonder
ful truths that in the short time of
the lesson period we shall be able
only to sketch the most important
points.
Jesus was distinctly a missionary.
During the short period of three and
a half years of His public ministry,
Jesus went several times over Judea
and Galilee, and into some of the sur
rounding country.
There was formed about Him the
first missionary society of which we
have any record, and it was formed
of women. Most missionary societies
since that time have been composed
of women. These women provided for
Jesus' support while He was on His
missionary journey.
On this journey somewhere a mul
tituue gathered about Jesus, and He
taught them by parables. One of
these is the familiar parable of the
sower, which He explains Himself (vs.
4-15). Every Christian ought to be
a sower of God's truth. Saved souls
are the harvest that will be gathered
His second parable is that of the
candle. If when lighted it is put
under an upturned vessel, it may con
tinue burning for a time, but it gives
no light in the house. If put under
one of their pallet beds it would at
once be extinguished. If we try to
hide in our hearts the light of life
that has been given us, it will either
be extinguished or it will do little
good.
Jesus calls upon us to be careful
how wo hear His truth. If we open
our minds and hearts to receive it,
more and more will be given us. If
we turn a deaf ear to it, we will soon
lose whatever we may seem to have
(vs. 16-18).
In connection with a visit of His
mother and His brethren, He uttered
the great truth that those are near
est and dearest to Him who "hear

When the sudden storm came and
caught HiVn and His disciples out on
the ?sea, Jesus showed His divine
power by calming the storm, and so
giving the disciples comfort and cour
age and sympathy (vs. 22-25).
This journey of our Saviour took
Him across the sea to its east side.
He landed on the coast of the Gada
renes. There met Him there a man
possessed of many devils. It is to
be hoped that no one will be deceived
by statements made by some modern
writers, who say that the man was
only a lunatic, and that his cries and
gestures frightened the hogs and
made them run down into the sea.
They say that Jesus, by the gentle
ness of His manner, influenced the
man, so that he became quiet. This
is far harder to believe than the sim
ple statements of Luke, who, under
the guidance of the Holy Ghost, said
the man was possessed with devils
who talked with Jesus, and, when He
commanded them to do so, came out
of him at once. Because we do not
understand how statements in tha
Bible can be true, is no reason why
we should not accept them. We do
not know how devils get into a man
and control him, but that should not
interfere with our accepting what
God's Word says about It.
The devil who spoke for the legion
showed that he had knowledge of who
Jesus was. There was no doubt in
his mind on that subject. He recog
nized Him as the Ruler, who could
control him and his fellows. He knew
that they deserved to be in hell, but
they preferred to be on earth.
In response to the inquiry as to
his name, the demon said it was "le
gion," because there were many of
them. A legion was a division of
the Roman army which might have
in it as many as 10,000 men. He
asked that they might go into a drove
of hogs that were feeding near by.
To whom the hogs belonged we are
not told. They may have belonged
to a Jew or to one of some other
nationality. Nor are we told why
Jesus permitted the devils to go into
the hogs, when He knew what would
happen. Many theories have been ad
vanced to explain these two points,
but, where the information is not re
vealed, the part of wisdom is to ad
mit our ignorance, and just accept
the facts as God gives them to us.
When the hogs had all run into
the sea, their keepers went and told
the owners what had occurred. When
they came to the scene of action the
possessed man was sitting, clothed
and in his right mind. But they
could not see a saved man for look
ing for dead hogs. When they found
that they really were dead they asked
Jesus to leave their country.
There are many people to-day who
are much more concerned about ma
terial things than they are about their
own spiritual welfare or that of
others.
This healed man very naturally
wanted to go with Jesus. He was
his best friend and his Saviour, rfut
Jesus had some work for him to do,
and work must come before pleasure.
The people would not let Jesus stay
in their country to preach salvation
to them, but He was unwilling to
leave them without some one to tell
them about Him. So He told this man
that he should go back and be His
representative. He might have said
that he did not know enough to preach
to the people. But Jesus tells him
that all He requires is that he will
tell the people at home what he does
know, and that is that he should show
them what great things Qod had done
for him. He could show it by telling
what had occurred, and he could show
