BENJAMIN CHAPIN WHERRY, BH.
The city and church lost a noble
character and choice spirit -when B.
C. Wherry, Sr., was called from his
earthly to his heavenly reward. Mr.
Wherry was born in the city of Rich
mond, Va., April 27, 1840, and en
tered into rest July 26, 1922, in the
eighty-third year of his age. On De
cember 11, 1866, he married Miss
Julia Somerville, and for over fifty
years their lives were blended togeth
er in a most delightful and blessed
union. Mrs. Wherry entered into glory
January 26. 1917.
Mr. Wherry was taught in the
schools of his native city, and then
entered the Virginia Military Insti
tute, from which he graduated in
1860. Just after beginning his busi
ness career the call of his countrj
came and he entered the army, where
he served with distinguished fidelity
throughout the whole period as first
lieutenant of the First Virginia Bat
talion of Regulars under "Stonewall
Jackson."
At the close of the war he settled
again in his home city and was
known far and wide for the upright
ness of his life, the integrity of his
character, and devotion to duty.
As a member and officer in the
church, in his love for the Master's
kingdom, he had few equals and no
superiors. Elected to office early in
life, he gave to it of his time, energy,
means, prayers and love, freely and
most whole-heartedly. He attended
the church courts with pleasure and
profit both to himself and to others.
Faithful, tireless, devoted, willing,
generous, charitable to all, he served
the church and the community with
a devotion and sacrifice that com
manded respect and won the admira
tion and affection of all. He was an
elder in whom there was no guile and
who was worthy of honor.
As a man and citizen he exerted
an influence upon a large circle of
acquaintances and friends. He had a
simple' but strong and abiding faith
in the risen Lord. His religion was
a joy to him and manifested itself in
such a way that others were attract
ed to that same source, as his pastors
can well testify. Firm and unafraid
in his convictions of truth, he was yet
gentle, patient, courteous, seeing the
best and likewise desiring the best
and highest for those with whom he
associated. His life was character
ized by a beautiful Christian sim
plicity and consistency, and he has
left a wonderful example of purity of
character beautiful to behold and to
be associated with. <
As a business man he was honored
and respected and beloved by all who
had any dealings with him. His word
was his bond.
Id his personal and family life ho
Hhone brightest of all. Bright, happy,
cheerful, he was always welcome in
any gathering, and in the home he
radiated sunshine and happiness. The
secret of it all was that in all things
he saw God's hand guiding and con
trolling in all things.
In the last few months of hi3 life,
cut off from active participation in
church and business affairs, he made
his room and home a place and th<*
occasion to show how faith could
shine with all of its resplendent beau
ty and power. When the end came
he was ready for the call. Quietly
and peacefully he fell asleep to
awaken in the glory everlasting and
to meet the loved ones there and to
be ready to greet those who shall
follow on. He leaves three sons and
one daughter to mourn the loss ?
Douglas, B. C., Jr., Robert S., and
Miss Emmie.
Services were conducted from the
First Presbyterian church by his pas
tor, Dr. F. T. McFaden, in the pres
ence of a large concourse of friends,
and the earthly remains were gently
laid to rest in Hollywood until the
resurrection morn.
"Know ye not that there is a prince
and a great man fallen this day in
Israel?"
"And I heard a voice from heaven
saying unto me, "Write, Blessed are
the dead which die in the Lord from
henceforth; yea, saith the Spirit, that
they may rest from their labors and
their works do follow them."
