GOVERNOR MITCHELL.
Floiida’s Governor Mitchell is re
ceiving some very pungent notices
by the press of the country. The
Chattanooga Times pays him this
compliment: “Having taken the
position that he would ‘prevent the
fight at all hazards,’ hesho ild have
done it, if be had to go counter to
all the courts and judges, from the
Alabama Georgia line to the Dry
Tortugas. Had he declared martial
law in Duval county, and with his
militia, run the fighters and all their
cohorts out of Jacksonville, in con
tempt of Judge Cali’s decision, at
the point of the bayonet, he would
be entitled to mu.;h respect for his
courage and consistency and truth
fulness. Having succumbed to the
dictum of of a single judge, and al
lowed the brutality to proceed un
molested to the end, the Governor
becomes a pitiable and petty object
es general contempt.”
A SAFE BUSINESS YEAR.
There is no doubt that during
this year business of all kinds will
be conducted on the most conserva
tive basis ever known in this coun
try.
The fact is the business of the
entire country is now in more con
servative hands than ever before.
The reckless and visionary and un
scrupulous have gone the way of the
world, swept away oy one of the
most stringent panics this country
has ever known.
For those who have survived the
outlook is all bright. They have
brought their business well under
control. They have cut off bad cus
tomers, and have been taught to buy
cautiously. There will not be suph
a demand for credit among the
farmers because they know that
credit will be hard to get, and they
have learned to live more at home
•and to buy less.
The death rate of the cities con
taining a population of 100,000 and
upwards in this country and Eu
rope, varies greatly. Those cities
having the lowest death rate are
Minneapolis 9.60 per 1,000; St. Paul,
19.61 per 1,000; Denver, 11. GO per
1,000; Louisville, 14.8 per 1,000;
Chicago, 18.95 per 1,000. Those
having the highest death rate are
New Orleans, 28.72 per 1,000;
Rheims (France) 28.62 per 1,000;
Dublin, 27.05 per 1,000; New York,
26.47 per 1,000 and Vienna, 25.07
per 1,000. These statistics are com
piled for the first half of 1893, by
Secretary Carter of the Maryland
Board of Health.
The New York Sun has discovered
that the “cracker” of the South is
doubtless merely the hominy eater.
The early settlers found that the
Indians cracked their corn in shal
low stone mortars, and, doubtless,
the new comers, before hominy mills
were known, imitated the savages
in this art. “Crack-corn” was, with
some old negro nurses, a humorous
term of teasing endearment for their
small charges. To call a child “lit
tle Tommy Crack corn” was a piece
of vexing humor.

The oldest lodge of Free Masons
in America, St. John’s Lodge of
Boston, recently celebrated its 160th
annual meeting, at which new officers
were installed by W ; zeman Marshal,
who was master of the lodge in 1858,
' 1859 and 1860. The lodge possesses
two carved bunches of grapes that
are the original tavern sign adorning
the Bunch of Grapes Inn in Boston,
where the first lodge of Free Ma
sons was established in 1733.
Editor A. E Nix, of Buchannan

him that’s our business and not his.

The smallest trick business house
in New York city was opened for
business a few days ago. It is 9
feet high, 15 feet 8 inches deep and
4 feet 4 inches front. It has a plate
glass show window as well as a
door. Its construction cost $l5O
and it rents tor S2OO a year. It is
situated in a blind alley between two
collessal business buildings, and is
occupied as a candy shop.

The New York Morning Adver

The St. Louts Republic’s picture

ought to cause an uprising in that
State.
Every one feels that better times

of confidence in all sections of the
