Increase Gold.
/ QUESTION IS RAISED.
low Will the Gold Reserve Be
Increased?—There is Con
siderable Interest.
Washington, Jan. 26.—Interest in
treasury department circles now routers
ii the question whether or not the actual
ret gold reserve of the treasury will bo
Materially built up by the disposal of
tie $50,000,000 bonds which Secretary
Carlisle has announced as his intention
t> sell on Fob. 1.
What doubt now exists on th s ques
ton is furnished by the fact that a con
certed movement ia the bon is might bo
.nade by winch payment lor the bonds
<bald bo brought about in iirectly by
fie medium of leg d ton ler notes and
Veasnry notes, an I which, while incre.is
jig the treasury net balance, would not
hull up tin gel I reserve in tin 1j nt.
I It must be admitted, however that lit
he genuine fear exists in this connec
tion, as there is not believed to be any
aesire on the part of the public to hoard
jold, but should it desire to do so, and
prevent the accumulation of tin yellow
metal in the treasury, it is within tile
power of the public to prevent such cir
culation.
Secretary Carlisle has announced in
eff 'Ct that the bonds may be pnd lor in
either gold coin or gold certificate!. He
thus removed any doubt that may have
i existed as to whether ne would accept
gold certificates for the bonds, h s orig
inal circular offering to soil bon Is, speci
fying that they were to bo paid for in
gold coin.
There are now about $77,003,000 in
gold certi.'icates in circulation, a rainst
which there is deposite 1 an equal
amount of gold bullion in the treasury.
The use of any large amount of these
notes in payment for bonds will result
in realizing a proportion;!.e degree of
gold held to redeem them, qnd thus add
to the net gold reserve. The use of gold
certificates m tho purchase of bonds
would have tho same practical effect,
therefore, as the use of gold coin itself,
except that there would be a correspond
ing decrease in the circulation of gold
certificates.
The treasury notes issued under the
Sherman act of 1880 are redeemablo in
coin upon presentation if thj holders de
sire. By the use indirectly of a large
number of the notes in the purchase of
bonds, the currency balance and not the
gold reserve of the treasury would bo
increased to the extent to which they
are used. Depositors can go to their
bankers and ask for their money m
treasury note?, then repair to the sub
treasury, when gold can bo obtain i,l for
them, and they can then use the latter
in the purchase of bonds. The effect of
this will be that an amount of gold will
be taken from the treasury equal to that
paid in. The result would be a material
increase of the currency balance, leaving
the gold balance in its present condition.
The treasury notes are. however, reis
sued, so no embarrassment of any kind
would be felt unless the government was
called upon to redeem at one time a vast
•quantity of coin obligations, a contin
gency which no one expects to happen.
The $340,000,000 legal tender notes are
also redeemable in gold and can be used
in the pnrec ■ .so of bonds precisely as the
treasury notes of 1890 can be used.
They are reissued when redeemed and
tdie currency balance will be increased
just to the extent to which they uiny be
available indirectly in buying bends.
Should the possibilities indicated be
come actual happenings tho treasury
will use the accumulated balance in
meeting the current obligations and re
tain the gold until currency balances be
came exhausted. Meanwhile, however,
the gold increases, as this is said to be
the natural tendency of affairs, especi
ally as all custom duties are paid in the
yellow metal. The treasury department
frequently receives offers of gold in ex
change for currency, as the latter money
is much easier and safer to handle, but
■of late it has been in the pre licament of
not having the currency with which to
meet the offers.

A Remarkable
Case.
About two years ago I was confined to my
room with a breaking out on my leg which my
physician pronounced Eczema. About three
weeks ago the same disease broke out again on
the same leg, and my physician has been attend
ing me regularly, calling from once to twice
daily, the sores all the time getting worse. A
friend called to see me, and brought about
one half teaspoonful of Clticl’RA, advising
me to try it, telling of himself, brothers and
mother having been cured by it. I would
not try it at first, although 1 had been on
crutches for over two weeks, and at one time I
counted between twenty-five and thirty suppur
ating sores, and had n’ot slept more than five
hours in three nights. Monday morning about
four o'clock the pain, burning and itching be
came so severe that 1 determined to try Cuti-
CURA, thinking that if it did no good, it could
not make my leg much worse, for it was as raw
as a piece of beef and as red as a beet, so I
applied the Cuticura, and it! five minutes after
I laid down I was asleep. Next day I sent and
got a box of Cuticura, and I'll pledge my honest
word 1 would not take 8100 to-day for it, if I
could not get another. 1 commenced using
Cuticura Monday morning about four o’clock,
-nd to-day (Tuesday) my leg is nearly well, not
withstanding I had not walked a step without
my crutches in two weeks. My gratitude to the
man who first compounded Cuticura is pro
found. Mav God bless hint.
