Highest of all in Leavening Power.—Latest U. S. Gov’t Report
ABSOLUTELY PURE
EGG BUSTIN’.
A Little Diiference About Reg
istration
LEADS TO WARM WORDS
Between Mayor Sam King and
Sheriff Jake Moore—Mr.
Nevin’s Position.
Tbe registration list is beginning to at
tract attention, though it does not yet
contain half the voters. Up to last night
there were only 175 whites nnd 52 colored
oitizsns on it, bat ih->y will come in faster
from this time forward.
An interesting ooioqny occurred at the
city e'etk’s < ffice yesterday when Mr.
John Vandiver and Sheriff Moore ap
peared with a list of names of men whom
they deaired to register. Mr. M. A.
Nevin, the registrar, told them that un
der the law governing city elections, per
sonal application must be made by citi
zens who wished to register. Mr. Van
diver bad a list of men who were not
present, and Mr. Nevin refused to regis
ter them.
“But you registered Burnett,” said Mr.
Vandiver,
"Fes,” said Mr. N vin, “he sent a writ- ■
ten request, and I considered that it com
plied with the spirit of the law, bu' I
cannot, register a long list <f men which
you bring in here and ask me to put
down.”
“Can a man register by telephone?” 1
asked Mr. Van fiver.
‘•Yer, I wou'd consider that a parsonal
application, if I was satirfic-d that tbe
man himself was at the phone, but it
won’t cmply with the law if you stand
up to tbe telephone aud read off a list of
names.”
Later Mr. Nevin was asked abrut the
matter and said: "I can’t violate the
law to accommodate any body. Co). Prin
tup, when he was mayor, held that a
man might be registered upon a written
request if his taxes are paid, and other
lawyeis think that complies with the pur
pose and spirit of the law, but it cer
tainly would not do so to legister a list
of names which a third party might
bring in.”
Warm Words.
This incident seems to have caused
some irritation to Sheriff Moore, and re
sul'ed io some warm words between him
and Mayor King. Complaining of Mr.
Nevin’s refusal to register the list for
them, Mr. Moore remarked that Mr.
Nevin had allowed Taylor Pearson and
some other party to legister names in
that, manner. Then the story goes that
Mr. K'tig said, “Do you believe what you
are saying about Mr. Nevin?” and Mr. '
Moore said that he did, whereup m the
mayor s aid warmly, “I don’t believe a
d—n word of i’.”
The c tnversa’ion seems to have been ,
spicy on both sides, for Mr. Moore is re- 1
ported to have said, “I'm goin’ to bust; I
an egg in Nevin.” !
Precisely what he meant by bustin’ an '
egg in Mr. Nevin is not clear, but tLe re
mark is understood to ben formal de
claration of war.
Another remark credited to him is that ;
he “wou’d elec John Moore mayor or go
to the poorhnust'.”
From this on the municipal race is ex
pected to be interesting.

MUST APOLOGIZE.
tho Khedive Let His Tongue IXun Too
Much—Other Foreign News.
Cairo, Jan. 26.—The situation of af
fairs arising from the khedive’s recent
criticism of the Egyptian army and the
British officers who have been organ
izing the Egyptians into fair military
material is serious. If the khedive per
sists in his present attitude it may lead
to his removal from the throne.
The protests from Lord Cromer, the
British agent, consul general and min
ister plenipotentiary, accompanied, it is
said, by a demand for an apology, w.-js;
made on the direct order of the »wl of
Rosebery, the British secretary of state
of foreign affairs.
It is now stated that Lord Crpiner has
also requested the khedkre to issue a de
cree praising the troops whom he had
previously blamed arid that Lord CroniVt
has been instructed to ask the khedive
to dismiss Maher Pasha.
Prime Minister Rinz Pasha has gone
to the khedive, at Assiout, to try to in
duce him to accede to Lord Cromer’s
demand. Failing of French sup pert, it
believed that the khedive will have no
course left hut to retract. This, it is
said, would entail a rwcousiructioa of tho
cabinet.
A Scandal in Quebec.
Quebec, Jan. 26.—A society scandal
that had been smouldering for some
time has become public by the suit for
separation. The principals are L. S.
■ Odell, a wealthy leather merchant of
Quebec, and his wife, both moving in
the best society. The lady is a daughter
of Commodore Gregory of the Dominion
fisheries. Their marriage some five years
i ago was preceded by an elopement.
The husband is complainant, and he
! would have sued for divorce but for his
I wife being a Catholic. For sometime
’ past the wife and a young lady have
caused much talk by their conduct with
other men. Five co-respondents are
mentioned. Among them is the private
seeretasy of a prominent politician. All
are prominent society men of Quebec
and Montreal.
..Promises a Sensation.
Quebec, Jan. 26. —Tho suit of ex-
Lieutenant Governor Real Angers, the
present Dominion minister of agricul
ture. against the Electeur newspaper for
charging that he had been bribed by a
present of a pair of horses, promises to
be sensational. Tho defendant takes ex
ception on tho ground that the plaintiff’s
jiame is not Augers. To prove his right"
to this exception, Pacand, the proprietor
| of the Electeur, will produce Governor
I Anger’s birth register and other docu
ments,* which it is promised will expose
a secret of the Angers family, thus far
carefully hidden from public. The
Governor’s father was the late Judge
. Real Angers.
Great Naval Improvements,
London, Jan. 26.—The admiralty au
thorities have completed the new ship
building plan, calling for the expendi
ture of 7,000,000 pounds,
: and have placed orders for new 50-toa
guns to supersede tho67-ton breechload
ers, which are now the principal anna
i ment of battleships. The armament and
■ frittings of warships in hand are being
1 pushed.
I The new scheme of armament is based
i upon the expectation that the next naval
war will boa test of maneuvering skill,
■ and that coal endurance will play a
i prominet part.

this sort has come from tho Brazilian
’ government. President Peixoto. tho
