The Galveston Maritime association
has issued a letter to the cotton trade of
that state in which improved cotton
baling is strongly advocated. The letter
refers to the increased insurance rate on
cotton, which, it is estimated, amounts
to $300,000 on 3,000.000 bales of cotton
As this increased amount must be paid
by the cotton raisers, owing to the
methods of baling in vogue, the asso
ciation advocates more care in prepar
ing the staple for market, with a view
of having the extra charges reduced.

NEW LIMBDE’S COTTON.

Government Instructs Official Marbury to
Inspect It and Report.
The famous Jackson limbless cotton
has assumed a national importance. Tues
day the United States secretary of agri
culture telegraphed to Weather and
Crop Official Marbury in At’auta to go
out to the Jackson farm and make a
thorough and exhaustive examination of
the plant, and then report to the gov
eminent- official at Washington.
Mr. Marbury at once went out to the
farm near the barracks, where the worn
derful cotton is growing, and through

the place and looked all over the field.
After making his examination he was
allowed to bring some of the cotton to
town with him to include with hia re
part.
Mr. Marbury was enthusiastic over the
limbless cotton. He said that it was the
finest crop of cotton be had ever seen.
He said that some of the cotton was so
tall that it could hardly be reached with
an uinbre'la. Tbe plant is thickly stud
ded all the way up with large bolls, and
the lowest estimate is that the six acres
will yield four bales to the acre.
The weather official will make a very
full report on the condition and prospect
ol the cotton, and will enter into its
probable commercial value. He will give
as full and complete a report on the sub
ject as could be desired, and when the
report is filed the government will then
be in a position to act as it may consider
proper.
That the government officials are evin
cing considerable interest in" the remark
able cotton is not a surprise. It is an en
tirely new variety of-cotton and is the
best species that has been grown in this
country. The government will probably
buy up large quantities of the seed and
distribute them among the agricultural
classes so as to insure a wide distribution
and a spread of the new variety.
The seed retails at S2OO per bushel,
and the present owners of the six acres at
Jackson’s farm have been offered $25,000
for the product of the field. The cotton
d<,es not have a limb on the stalk, and
has many advantages not possessed by
other varieties.
Mr, Marbury will file his report in a
few days, aid the government will prob
ably take early action in order to secure
tbe seed that is now being grown,
Mr. John W. Quarles has several stalks
of this wonderful cotton growing in the
garden at his home in North Rome. He
was in Atlanta several months ago and
secured a few seed from Mr. Jackson.
He planted them and the marvelous pro
duct may be seen growing at his home.

letter* and Package, From the Fever Dl«-
t riots Full of Holes
Letters and packages coming into
Rome fro a all points where fever pre
vails arrive perforated full of tiny holes.
A big consignment name in yesterday
and every letter and package was as full
of holes as a sifter.
All the Mobile and Montgomery pa
pers/iil to reach this city now, and it is’
presumed none are sent through.
The process of perforating the letters
is vety simple. The clerks are provided
with paddles which are thickly studded
with sharp nails. The letters are laid
oue by one on a block and struck by the
paddle. The nails are stuck clean
through the letters and all germs that
are not impaled on the nails will be after
wards suffocated by the gas. Tbe letters
are subjected for a long time to the
fumes of the gas, and there is no possi
ble danger from handling a letter from
the infected district
Warning is given to the no
valuable article should be entrusw.l to
the malls. No matter bow valuable it
will be punched full of - holes and en
tirely ruined. Photographs that happen
to be sent in letters will be ruined. The
clerk who is doing the fumigating has
no favorites and he will punctuate the
countenance of any photograph that may
be sent.
Faint. tited in Atlanta-
For the first time in Atlanta’s history,
mail was fumigated here yesterday, says
the Constitution.
Nine expert mail clerks were bu?y all
day long jabbing holes in a carload of
letters and packages, and distributing
the mail into the fumigating racks and
back into its propdr place again.
The fumigation was made necessary by
reason of the refusal of Montgomery to
rece ve mail from any point unless it was
thoroughly fumigated. Os course there
was no teal necessity of fumigating the
mails sent out from Atlanta, as there
could be no possibility of any fever
germs where there is no fever, but the
Montgomery people will not allow the
mail inside their limits unless it is full of
holes and bears a’sulpLunc'smel'.
No mail has been received in Mont
gomery ia several days, and consequent
ly a big carload of letters and packages
has accumulated at the depot. This
was sent to Montgomery once, but was
refused.
•‘All right,” said’the mail officials, “we
will let the mail stay here and the fools
at Montgomery may do without their let
ters.’’
But the Montgomery folks grew tired
of having no letters from their wives,
husbands, sweethearts, friends and busi
| ness relations. A meeting of the public
I was held and the health officers decided
' tc allow the mail to enter the city from
| A lanta if it was fumigated. They sent
1 a telegram to Superintsndent Terrell.
■ telling him that fumigated mails would
be allowed in the city.
Yesterday morning Superintendent
Terrell decided to fumigate the carlosd
of mail and send it to Montgomery. He
detailed nine men to do the work’ The
car with all the western mail was rolled
to the Central railroad yards, and side
tracked there.

NINE-YEAR-OLD SWIMMER.
Little Lizzie Hagan Ha* Accomplished Some
Wondeifnl Feats Iu the Tennessee River,
Chattanooga, Sept. 22.—Little Liz
zie Hagan, the bright nine-year-old
daughter of R. W. Hagan, a promi
nent citizen of this county, is an ex
pert swimmer, and perhaps, has
broken the record for long-distance
swimming for a child her age. She
has a natural talent for swimming,
and is perfectly at home in the muddy
waters of the Tennessee river. About
a year ago she made her first attempt
at swimming. She was enraptured
with the sport, and her visits to the
river thereafter were frequent. The

expert was performed about a month
ago, when she undertook t> swim
across tbe Tennessee river and back
without stopping. This the little
miss accomplished. The river is half
a mile wide at the point where a,.e
crossed. The task was laborious, a- o
one that many old and expert swim
mers would not care to undeitake tor
pleasure, at least. After having ac
complished this the little girl becaiie
more daring, and within the past few
weeks has won for herself an enviable
second.
The other day, just to test her abili
ty, Mr. Hagan started his daughter on
a swim down the river from River
view Park. She swam from this point
to the lower feriy road, helow the
county bridge, a distance of at least
two and a half miles. Tills she did iu
54 minutes.
Lizzie Hagan is a small child, and,
of course, her father does not permit
her to take these long trips alone. He
invariably follows her in a boat to
render any assistance should the
young miss meet wiui a mishap of
any character. Up to date tier trips
have all been successful, ana fortu
nately she has met with no accidents.
The child is of slender build, shoit
hair and bine eyes. She is very ac
tive and pretty. Oue of her hobbies
is horseback riding. She weighs fif
ty-four pounds, and is 4 feet and 2
inches in height.
