HOMANS FIND PEARLS
Mr. Morgan Ma ! his Has a Valuable Col
lection ts Them.
MRS, HAMMONDS HAS A FINE LOT
The Penrle Owned bv Her Were Found on
Armuoliee Creek— How to Find Miu
sell Shells.
Ths interest in North Georgia’s latest
source of wealth, pearl hunting, contin*
ues unabated.
Parties are. going out every day on
some one of the thiee rivers or the nu
merous creeks in this county and several
good finds have been reported.
Capi. John C. Printup went up the
river a few days ago, and casually made
a search for mussel shells. He had opened
only a few before he found a beautiful
pearl about the size of a large shot. The
gem was purple colored, and had that
peculiar lustre that makes this gem so
valuable.
He searched a little farther and found
another, a creamy white but not quite
so large as the first. He presented the
two pearls to his daughter, Miss Ava,
who will have them set in some kind of
a jewel.
Mr. Morgan Mathis, of this city, has a
small phial full of the gems, which he
has collected. There are about fifty of
them. Unfortunately none of them are
perfectly formed, which dctiacts from
their marketable value. He has one very
large one, of irregular shape. The stones
are of opalescent and brilliant colors,
and attract attention,
Mrs. Hiram Hammonds, of Armuchee,
the mother gs Dr. L. P. Hammond, of
this city, has over a dozen exquisite
pearls. They were found by her hus
band on Armuchee creek many years ago,
and Mrs. Hammond esteems them very
highly. She has been offered very
handsome prices for her collection, but
will not part with them. They are all
very large and of varied and brilliant
colors,
Ray Stewart has foufad a number of
pearls within the past few weeks, and
has several perfect shaped gems.
Good Time to Look For Pearl*.
Just now is the most favorable time
for searching for pearls. The streams
are as clear as crystal, and the bottom
may be plainly seen. The dry weather,
too, hgs caused the rivers to be very low.
The way to find them is to wade up
stream, and watch intently the ground
beneath. The mussels do not lay loose
above the ground, but are buried. Only
a narrow opening can be seen, marking
where the mussel lays. Push "a sharp
pointed stick into the opening, and the
shell closes up. and it is easily extracted.
If success doesn’t reward you at first re
peat the experiment until the coveted
pearl is found. The low water and
clearness of the streams is very favorabb
these days,
AN AIL INTA JEWELER
Mr. Greer, an Expert on Pearip, Talks of The
Prespecta Here.
Jeweler M. Greer, of Atlanta, has
just returned from Calhoun and upper
Georgia, where he went to investigate
the reports of finds of beautiful and
valuable specimens of pearls says the
(constitution.
He brings back with him several speci
mens of mussel shells and in several of
them are pearls attached to the shell.
His visit to the scene of the finds has
proved beyond a doubt that there are
pearls of value to be found in greater or
less quantities near Calhoun and Rome.
Mr. Greer makes a specialty of pearls
He has had a great amount of experience
with the jewels and it takes him only a
short time to tell their value and quality.
When he heard of the finds in upper
Georgia he decided that the matter was
worth looking into and at once proceeded
to the scene.
He found Frank Wyatt, one of the
men who is reported aS having found
IT IS EASY 10 TELL
People who fail to look after their
health are like the carpenter who neg
lects to sharpen hie tools. People are not
apt to get anxious about their health
soon enough. If you are “not quite
well' - or “half sick” have yon ever
thought that your kidneys may be the
cause of your sickness?
It is easy to tell by setting aside your
urine for twenty-four hours; a sediment
or settling indicates an unhealthy condi
tion of the kidneys. When urine stains
linen it is evidence of kidney trouble.
Too frequent desire to urinate, scanty
supply, pain or dull ache in the back is
also convincing proof that the kidneys
and bladder are out of order.
There is satisfaction in knowing that
the great remedy Dr. Kilmer’s Swamp-
Root, fulfills every wish in relieving
weak or diseased kidneys and all forms
of bladder, and urinary troubles. Not
only does Swamp-Root give new life
and activity to the kidneys—the cause
of troublej but by treating the kidneys
it acts as a tonic for the. entire consti
tution. If you need a medicine take

valuable specimens of pearls, and to
gether they went out into the bed of the
river and picked up mussel shells. A
great many shells were examined, but
no fine specimens of pearls were found.
In many of the shells clusters of small
and valueless pearls were found. This
showed conclusively that there were
pearls there if a person chanced to find
the shells that contain them. After
examining the mussel shells and satisfy
ing himself that pearls can be found
there Mr. Greer went to Calhoun and
Rome to look at the specimens that have
already been found. He discovered that
most of the specimens found lately are
very small and are almost worthless.
As a matter of fact, it takes a large,
brilliant, well shaped pearl to bring any
sort of price on the market and Mr.
Greer found that the ones there were
very small, and though they were genu
ine pearls, were of scarcely any value.
‘‘l believe pearls are there and that
they can be found,” said he yesterday,
in speaking of the matter. "A person
might look through a wagon load of
shells and not find one pearl and on the
other band he might look through a half
bushel and find several fine specimens.
I 'believe that if the hunters dQ not be
come diseouraged they will find some
valuable specimens of pearls?’’
The pearls Mr. Greer handles now are
sent from Tennessee and he has received
some from other states. He has investi
gated the Arkansas finds and if any
go d specimens are discovered there
they will be sent to him. He has made
arrangements with those in upper Geor
gia interested in the pearl discoveries
and if any good specimens are obtained
be will receive them.
Though Mr. Greer’s visit shows that
the finds are not as extensive as at first
thought, still it leaves no doubt that
there are pearls in the river and many
valuable ones may be found.
For the benefit of those who may hunt
pearls Mr. Greer gives some .informa
tion on the specimens that are of value.
There are three shapes that are market
able. They are round, pear shaped and
button shaped. The round comes firs
and is, of course, the most valuable. As
|er it comes the pear shaped and then
the button, which is not a half pearl
but a button shaped one.
The value of the pearl is affected by
the luster and color of it. The pink
tinted and brilliant ones seem to be the
most valuable.
