NEGRO POSTMASTERS
Senator A. O. Bacon Gives Reasons Why
Negroes Should Not be Appointed.
Others beside Governor Atkinson
were requested by the New York Her
ald to give their views on the Hogans
ville postmsstership trouble. Among
them was Senator A. 0. Bacon, whose
leply was as follows:
“The appointment of colored men to
office in the South will certainly lead to
race antagonism and estrangements
which would otherwise not exist. Such
appointments are of small benefit to the
few negroes thus appointed, and are of
very great injury to the masses of the
negroes in the ill-feeling engendered
between them and the whites, upon
whose friendship and good will they are
wholly dependent.
* ‘The personal relation between the
whites and the negroes in the South is
exceedingly kindly. Harsh treatment
and violence are comparatively rare in
stances. The general rule of treatment
affecting the millions of negroes in the
South is one of kindness and considerate
personal interest on the part of the
whites. The white people of the South
nevertheless do not disguise their asser
tion of superiority as a race and their
unwavering purpose to be the rulers of
the country both in the making and in
the administration of the laws.
' ‘The appointment of negroes to of
fice necessarily militates against this
position and against this purpose and en
courages and give opportunity for vio
lence on the part of the lawless element,

which is not approved by the great
masses of the white people, who are
law abiding and opposed to violence.
While unalterable in the maintenance
of their superiority and of their rule, it
is their desire and purpose to effect this
through peaceful means and not through
violence,
“Left to themselves this is easily ac
complished through the influence of the
recognized and indisputable superiority
mental and moral, of the white race.
This even temper and peaceful condition
are rudely disturbed by trusting the ne
gro with positions of authority and com
mand which they could never attain
among the white people through their
unaided powers.
“If the debts due by the Republican
politicians to the negro politicians re
quire their political recognition in ap
pointments to office, such appointments
should be made to positions in com
munities whose people do not object to
the posts of authority and command
among them being held by negroes.
Such communities and such people are
not found among the whites of the
Southern Stares,
“The people of Georgia deeply regret
the appointment of negroes to office by
this administration, but they do not ap
prove of violence to such appointees,
and instances of such violence will be
rare.”

GEORGIA’3 GOLD.
Mr. Belmont, an English Expelt, Talks of Our
Mlnnera’s.
Mr, George Belmont, a native of
England and who has been engaged in
gold mining for the past twenty years,
is spending some time in Gordon county
says the Calhoun Times. He has mined
in Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand
and the Pacific slope and is an expert
gold prospector.
He has just returned from “a trip to
the mountains of Pickens and Gilmer
and said to the Times Monday.
“We discovered some very rich leads
in the mountains and I am fully satis
fied that that the mountains just east
of here are as rich as those of Lump
kin county, Georgia is the coming
mining state of the union. There are
vast rich deposits all through the
mountain regions that have never
been touched and when they are
bought up and the proper machinery
is applied you will see as big results as
are obtained at any of the mines of
the west. Why, you have some very
rich silver veins right here in the vi
cinity of Calhoun which will someday
be worked with profit. Georgia pos
sesses every requirement for a great
mining state. Min-ral in abundance,
wood, water and labor which can be
had cheaply and easily climate suit
able for work all the year, in fact
there is nothing needed but the prop
er machinery and the proper methods,
and they are coming, and don't you
forget it.”
Mr. Belmont may make his home
here, at least he will spend many
months prospecting the mountains of
this part of tbe state.
