Ohio lan Snppjsed to Be Murdered,
LlY'ng in Marietta.
IB DIS4PPE RED THREE YEARS AGO
Relatives Supposed He Had Been Murderer 1 ,
and One Man Wes \rre«t«a on Na,
plelon—Discovered by Accident
The Marietta Journal has unearthed
a sensation which has its other end in
Ohio
For several days the telegraph wires
have brought telegrams to the Marietta
' Journal from Canton, 0., inquiring if
J. H. Conkell was in Marietta, and if
so, ascertain if he was the same Cqp
kell who, after putting up a monument
■s Leetonia, O in October, 1394, had
suddenly disappeared- and was sup
posed to have been murdered for tie
amount of money he had.on his person,
some S3OOO.
It seemed that Conkell lived in Can
ton, 0., with his wife and six children
and was the proprietor of the Monu
mental Marble Works. After going to
Leetonia and finishing the putting up of
a monument there, his tools were car
ried to the depot. This was October 13,
1894. Then the ground seemed to have
opened up and swallowed Conkell. Legal
investigations were had and a grave
digger, named Lift Witzmau, was
charged with Conkell’s murder and was
arrested and kept in jail three months.
finally discharged, sold his home
and left for Springfield, 0., under bus
picion as a mure crer and robber.
In the meant'me a newly made grave
was opened, but there was no body
there and the mysterious disappearance
of Conkell deepened. Hie family were
anxious and money was spent to find
the missing man.
• Recently Robert Grahame, formerly
of Cleveland, 0., in selling marble for
the Kennesaw Marble Company, had
occasion to visit Mozley’s marble works
in Marietta, and in conversation with J,
H. Connell, foreman, discovered the
long lost Conkell. The result was Con
nell acknowledged that he was the miss
ing man. Graham went back to Canton,
0., and Cleveland, 0., and told of his
sudden discovery that the supposed dead
man was living in Marietta, Ga., work
ing at bis trade.
Then came telegrams asking the edi
tors of The Journal to interview Connell
and see if Graham’s etory was true. The
first interview with Connell did not
pan out. but later he retracted his de
nial, and in a flood of tears contested
that he was the identical Conkell who
had disappeared from Leetonia, 0., in
October, 1894. He passed under the
name of J. H. Connell here.

TIRED OF SCRUTINY.
Mrs Nobles Dashed a Pan of Water Into
• the Faces oi Visitors.
Mrs. Nobles has grown tired of be
ing scrutinized by visitors to the jail
and now refuses to see .any one says
the Macon Telegraph.
| In order to keep people from seeing
I her through the bars of her cell, she
has hung a blanket up over the door
; which completely hides her from view
and no amount of persuasion can in
duce her to remove it for visitors.
I A few days ago a party of strangers
1 called at the jail especially to see Mrs.
Nobles, having read so much about
i her. She had the blanket up and re
■ fused to see them, but so anxious were
they to see the old woman that one
of them pushed aside the blanket
with a stick. As he did so, Mrs.
Nobles dashed -a wash pan full of
water into the faces of the strangers,
and pulled the blanket back in place.
They did not have any more desire to
see the famous prisoner, and left the
jail immediately.
