IS IT YELLOW .JACK?
Prominent Gentlemen From New Orleans
Say Many Physicians Doubt It.
THE DEATH RATE IS VERY LOW
It Was Greater For trie Same Last
When There Was No So-Called
Yellow Fever There.
It is said that doubt exists in the
minds of many reputable citizens in New
Orleans as to whether the disease now
prevalent there is the genuine yellow
jack.
A Tribune reporter talked with a gen.
tiemen yesterday from the Crescent City,
but whose name is withheld by his own
request.
“There are circumstances connected
with the present outbreak of a disease in
our city, which occasions grave doubts
as to whether it is the genuine yellow
fever, the dreaded malady of the gulf
and lower Mississippi siction.
“This doubt exists with not only a
large number of the citizens who have
gone through epidemics of it, but many
of the best informed and most reputable
physicians there. That it is a species of
fever is unquestioned, but is it yellow
jack ?”
“It is a fact that the death rate in
New Orleans was greater at this period
last year than it is now with the so-called
yellow fever in the city. The percent
age of deaths from the disease is very
low, lower than ever known for yellow
jack, and it spreads so slowly that that
offers another argument for .doubts.
“There is no panic in New Orleans,
and the people do not seem to dread the
disease at all. The exodus has been
light, comparatively a small number
leaving the city. The greatest part of
the matter is that business is utterly
paralyzed. The churches, schools, thea
tres and such are all closed, and all
large public congregation of people is
utterly prohibited. ,
“The quarantine regulations, too, are
as strict as it is possible to make them.
If you attempt to leave New Orleans and
cannot show perfectly satisfactory health
certificates you will be certain to be put
off the train. When the train leaves the
doors are locked and the windows closed
tight. You go for miles without any
body coming around to let a fresh breath
of air in, and the experience is far from
pleasant. They always manage to lock
in about ten million mosquitoes, which
does not add any enjoyment to the ex
perience.
Borne Excitement In Fifth Ward.
There was some excitement in the
Fifth ward yesterday afternoon, caused
by the arrival of a daughter from Mo
bile of a Mts. Nix.
She said she came in Thursday night,
but others say she arrived yesterday
morning.
The matter was investigated by Chief
Shropshire last night, but he found
nothing of a suspicious nature.

JUDGE MADDOX’S SPEECH.
He Made a Fine bpeech at The Chick amt auga
Reunion Saturday.
The largest and most enjoyable re
union that the Confederate soldiers
have ever held in the history of Ca
toosa county, was the one which con
vened at Chickamauga National Park
last Saturday.
The attendance was very large and !
a notable list of speakers made ad
dresses to the gathering. The Ring
gold New South has the following to
say about Congressman John W. Mad
dox’s speech:
“The speech of Hon. John W. Mad
dox was the effort of the day. In the
most eloquent and natural manner
he referred to the stiring days of the
struggle on the battlefield, where the
crowd was now assembled. Accord
ing to the modern lexicographer, the
Yankees never got whipped in the
fight of Chickamauga or anywhere
else, when they got whipped and had
to run they simply retired. In facj
the word retired seemed to cover all
their defeats and shortcomings. He
referred to the makers of history and
said none of them seemed inclined to
give the Southern soldiers his just
dues, but said Judge Maddox, “we
will tell it to our boys and tell it to
them right, and they will hand it
down to the generations to come.”
Sime day a history will be written
that will give us justice, and when it
is done we will be satisfied. Look
over this batterfleld and examine the
different monuments and yon can eas
ily find out who had to retire from
here, and retire in a hurry besides.”

Old Sarsaparilla.
That’s Ayer’s. The same old
sarsaparilla as it was made and
sold by Dr. J. C. Ayer 50 years
ago. In the laboratory it is
different. There modern appli
ances lend speed to skill and
experience. But the sarsapa
rilla is the same old sarsaparilla
that made the record — 50 years
of cures. Why don’twe better
it? Well, we’re much in the
condition of the Bishop and the
raspberry: “ Doubtless, ”he
said, " God might have made a
better berry. But doubtless,
also, He never did. ” Why
don’t we better the sarsaparilla?
We can’t. We are using the
same plant that cured the
Indians and the Spaniards. It
has not been bettered. And
since we make sarsaparilla com
pound out of sarsaparilla plant,
we see no way of improvement.
Os course, if we were making
some secret chemical compound
we might.... But wt’re not.
We’re making the same old sar
saparilla "to cure the same old
diseases. You can tell it’s the
same old sarsaparilla be
cause it works the same old
cures. It’s the sovereign blood
purifier, and— it’s Ayers.
SIMMONS STH.L AT LARGE,
The Famous Illicit Whiukey Dealer Seems
To Have Made Good FlB Escape.
James Simmons', who cleverly elu
ded the guards and escaped from the
county ehaingang six miles from the
city Tuesday night, has let no grass
grow under his feet.
He has as "completely disappeared
as thou'gh swallowed up by the earth,
and though the officials have been
diligent in their search for him, no
trace of the fellow cau be found,
Simmons is considered a very bad
character, and when aroused a dan
gerous man.
For a long tirfie he and two brothers
gave much trouble around Cave
Spring selling illicit whiskey. It
finally got so hot for them that they
moved to Cherokee county, Alabama,
where they lived up to their unsavory
reputation.
They finally became so abnoxious
that they were indicted by the grand
jury there, James Simmons was ar
rested and placed in jail at Centre.
This aroused bis brothers, and one
day when officers went to arrest them
Deputy Huce Webb was shot down in
cold blood. They immediately de
camped, and Mrs. James Simmons was
arrested and placed in jail on the
charge of having murdered Webb.
Her trial attracted a great deal of at
tention, but there was not evidence
sufficient to convict, and she was ac
quitted
Jas. Simmons was then brought
here and tried under two indictments
for selling whiskey; was convicted on
both and sent to the chaingang for
two twelve month terms. There are
three other bills against him here on
the same charge and several at Centre.
The Simmons crowd are utterly
vitiated and at the hands of one of
them a brave and trua man found his
death in the discharge of his duty.

WHO IS THE JOKE ON?
Clerk Halsted Smith Had Trouble in Getting
Identified at Exprees Office.
Yesterday about noon City Clerk
Halsted Smith went into the Southern
Express office to have a exprees money
order cashed-
There was only one man on duty
and he was a stranger to Mr. Smith.
The genial city official, however,
walked upto the window, and said:
■‘l have an express money order
which I would like cashed,” at the
same time laying down the paper.
The clerk picked it up and glanced
at it, then eaid:
“You will have to be identified sir.”
Mr. Smith looked completely non
plussed. That anybody in the Hill
City should not know him. was a re
freshing novelty. Just then a Tribune
reporter passed, and was called in to
do the identification act. But the new
clerk did not know him any better
than be did Mr. Smith.
Growing desperate, Mr. Smith
started out on the search, and finally
succeeded in getting Ned Huggins,the
colored barber, to affirm that the
owner of *the express money order
was none other than City Clerk Hal
sted Smith.
