Several Make Favorable Propositions
To Men In Jellico District.
The past week has witnessed a no
ticeable change in the mining strike
situation in tbe Jellico district.
Tbe majority of the operators of the
Blue Gem mines have settled with
the miners by paying last year’s scale.
The conditions on which the scale is
paid are different at some at the
mines however.
It is said that other operators con
template signing a contract to resume
operations under the old scale as soon
as minor details can be attened to.
These mines will pay their men on the
first Saturday after the 10th of the
month, excepting the B. A. Connelly
Coal company, which will pay every
two weeks.
In the immediate Jellico district but
little work is being done at present.
The standard Coal & Coke company
at Newcomb, is working with a dozen
men and almost tbe same number of
United States deputy marshal on
guard.
At Proctor a number of men are at
work. It is understood that this com
pany has agreed to give their men
the five months’ rent, fuel and doctor
bills, and start out anew after the
men go to work. This the miners
think very considerate, and will be
tbe means of causing them to return
to work immediately. Thejoperators
at that point have also agreed that
as long as the men will produce the
amount of coal needed in their trade
they will not crowd the mines, but
work enough men so all can make a
fair living. This company has served
notices on the men to vacate their
bouses after the Ist of the month or
go to work; otherwise they will will
be evicted.
. The Danforth mines have settled
with their men and many of them
have resumed work.
E. E. Burley, president of tbe
National Trade Assembly, of Colum
bae, 0., is at Jellico to assist the min
ers in securing an amicable settlement
of the strike. He is endeavoring to
arrange matters, but many of the
miners are obdurate and declare
they will not dig a bushel of coal un
til the operators will accede to their
demand for a new scale. They fur
ther say that the labor organization
will keep them from starving and
that they can remain out all winter
if necessary. The men are apposed
to all violence, it is said, and on this
account have drawn a great deal of
sympathy.
