Coffee.
An evidence of the fact that the
coffee of some of Rome’s grocers is
not what it should be, is the pur-;
chase of our Quality and Quantity
coffee this week by all families in
Rome, whose coffee trade we have
worked for, without success, for a
long time. To one part} we sold
one can containing three pounds as
a sam''’ e ’hree days later he

contains the best Moctft and Java
that grows. No chance for it to
lose any of its strength Oi aroma
when you can get it in a sealed can.
If that is too high for your purse,
then call for Pavoma coffee put up
in pound packages and a silver
plated spoon for 12 cents. We
guarantee this coffee to be superior
to any package goods on this mar
ket, and you would do well to buy
a supply while the roasters are
offering Such a great inducement to
get it introduced here, If we ijo
not give you better value for your

Exposition Races Here From Oct. 26 to
29 is Growing in Jlmporiaoce.
SOME FAST HOILES ARE COMING
Letter* of Enquiry Have Already Been Re
ceived From Nine bt&tes—Track
in Bel> g Put In Great Bhpe
The managers of the exposition park
races are very much elated over the
prospects for their meeting October
26-29. They say that all indications
are that they will have the highest
class lot of horses as well as the
greatest number of them ever brought
| together on any race course in Geor
gia. While the entries do not cldse
until next Saturday, October 2nd.,
they are receiving daily enquiries
from all parts of the country for entry
blanks, .stall reservations and etc.
The enquiries a’.ready received come
from Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Ken
tacky, Tennessee, North Caroline,
South Carolina, Georgia and Ala
bama, and among them are the
owners of some star performers includ
ing Calypso 2:10, Palmetto Prince 2:11
and others. As soon as the entries are
all in a list of them will be published
in this paper giving the horses names
and pedigrees, the names and ad
dresses of their owners.
There will be numerous improve
ments made at exposition park within
the next four weeks including some
forty new stalls, grand stand, etc. Work
was commenced on the track last week
to put it in first class condition and as a
prominent horseman from Augusta, Ga.,
remarked upon his examination of the
track when the work Was completed
that it was the best one-half mile track
in the south, and he has seen them all
as he has campaigned a stable of horses
for several years, taking in all of the
southeon meetings.
The horseman will soon begin to ar
rive as a letter received on Saturday
from Geo. Stiles of Kingston, Tenn.,
said that he would anive here with his
stable of seven head on the 16th. Ben
Whitehead is expected home from Ken -
tucky with his horses about the 15th.
He will be accompanied by Mr. Grundy,
of Lebanon. Ky., and Mr. Coleman of
Harrodsburg, Ky., who will ship their
horses in his car, and when the time
arrives for the races to commence there
will be some seventy-five horses on the
grounds ready to battle for winter oats.
Other letters received state that there will
be some ten head from Macon, eight Irora
Marietta, five from Montgomery, Ala.,
and others to numerous to mention and
when they come together Romans will be
treated to such high class racing that
they will think that they will think that
a second edition of Star Pioner 1:59 1-4
and Joe Patchen 2:01 has bit the town.

AT THE OPERA HOUSE.
VVoodward-Warren'Company Delight a House
Packed to Suffocation.
When the curtain went up on the
first act of a “Practical Joke” last,
night, a sea of faces greeted the
Woodward-Warren company. Every
available space in the bouse was
crowded to suffocation.
And everybody was delighted with
the performance. It was a clean cut
farce comedy with enough dash and
go to cause a continuous uproar ol
aughter and applause.
Mr. Woodward and Miss Warren
are especially clever. The company
have * ‘caught on” here in great shape,
and will no doubt play to a crowded
house every performance.

Just as no man by taking

just as a desert will blossom

HOME FROM SAPELO,
Hon, Wesley Shropshire Had a Most
Interesting Trip,
Hon. Wesley Shropshire, state sena
tor from this district, returned to
Rome yesterday afternoon from his
trip to Sapelo island as a member of
the.sub committee on the penitentiary
bill.
“It was one of the most interesting
trips I ever took,’’-said he. “We
went via Brunswick and reached the
island about 1 o’clock Friday after
noon. We left Saturday afternoon at
ft<ll
HON. WESLEY SHROPSHIRE.
He is a Leader in Settling Georgia’s
Great Convict Problem.
3 o’clock. The island was very fertile.
Sea island cotton was higher than my
head, rice and sugar cane very fine,
and corn and potatoes grow well.
“The history of the island reads
like a romance. Thomas Spalding
who owned and worked the island
with several hundred slaves had a lit
tle kingdom. The ruins of his palatial
mansion are now to be seen on the
island, a witness of its former glory.
The negroes on the island talk a most
peculiar jargon that none of us could
understand when they talked to each
other. They always say “sir’ ’to every
question.
“The people of Brunswick turned
their city over to us Sunday. We,
also, visited Jeykyl island and saw
the splendid mansions of the mill
ionaires. We could not be treated
more hospitably than we were by the
people of Brunswick, and I am sure
we greatly appreciated it. All that I
saw was so different from North
Georgia that I almost feel like I had
been to another country. It was de
lightfully cool, there were no mosqui
toes. I never slept so soundly in my
life.”
Mr. Shropshire will return to At
lanta next Tuesday to meet with the
sub-committee. He takes a leading
part in the discussions and is one of
the ablest men the 42nd district has
ever bad in the Georgia senate.

Fev. Hiiltb Certificates Charged* For by
Ciiy Physician,
IT WAS THROUGH MISUNDERSTANDING
Sio.-y in Papers are Exaggerate,:—Major
King iMUrd StrlcA Oruers That So
More should He charged.
There appeared in yesterday morn
ing’s Chattanooga Times the follow
ing.
“Tiie misfortunes of the yellow fever
seourage are proving to be a veritable
bonanza to the city physician of Rome,
Ga. That official's name is Harris,
and he is working the quarantine of
the larger cities to his own profit to
the queen’s taste. Let any one be
compelled to stop in Rome and it will
cost him just $1 to get a health cer
tificate from the enterprising city
pbysican.
“Several Chattanoogans were caught,
recently in Rome and went to bis
honor the mayor to find out bow they
must proceed in order to get a certifi
cate that would stand off the quaran
tine guards. His honor directed them
to the city physician, and that worthy
charged them $1 before he would let
them leave the city. The extortion
has aroused a good deal of indigna
tion, and the once popular city is
coming in for a very seveie roasting
from traveling nSen who have been
compelled to submit to this unheard
of action of a public official.
“This charge would be all right in a
private physician, but it is outrageous
when practiced by a man paid for his
public services, especially when the
act to be charged for requires no skill
nor trouble nor loss of time. The
beys will dodge Rome until after the
quarentine is raised.’’
The Tribune Sunday morning gave
the truth of this business, and a plain
statement of facts.
Dr. C. S. Harris, the city physician,
under a misaprehension that it was
necessary to collect for these health
certificates, did charge for probably a
half dozen several days ago. The
matter was immediately reported to
Mayor King, and he at once issued
orders that under no circumstances
whatever should the ceotificates be
charged for. Since then none have.
The salary of the cit y physician covers
all such contingencies.
Nobody regrets tbe misunderstand
ing more than Dr. Harris.
■ The attention of the Times is called
to the fact that Tallahoma, Tenn., is
charging $1 for health certificates.

THE SINGING SUNDAY.
A L.rge Crcwd Enjoyed the Bay at Fellow
ship Church.
The twenty-seventh annual singing
at Fellowship church Sunday was a
great success.
An unusuaLy large crowd was
present, and they came from all over
Floyd Jcounty and many from other
counties. Rome sent out quite a large
delegation,
The entire day was devoted to sing
ing, and the good old time hymns were
very popular with the gathering.
Jake C. Moore, John P. Davis, J. D.
Turner, Prof. Perry and others led the
singing. Mr Moore was present for
the twenty-sixth time since the organ
ization of the'singing convention. Just
27 years ago it was organized, and he
was one of those to start it. In 1895
circumstances compelled his absence.
There was an abundant basket din
ner served at noon, and everybody had
plenty of good things to eat.
